Hi, everyone, this is Kathi Rogers, here. MSD of Lawrence Township
webmaster and Haiku LMS guru. This Google Group is all new to me, so
I hope I know what I'm doing here....
As for Haiku, all I can say is Way Cool! We love it here in Lawrence
Township! We use if for sharing Professional Development and all
types of courses K-12, so we'd love to learn more about what other
folks are doing and how they are using it.
We have some groups of teachers who would love to get their student
work out on the web, so we are especially interested in hearing about
how other folks are using Haiku Wiki's and student portfolios.

Thanks for this opportunity to learn and share!

My name is Dan Sitter, I'm a Social Studies teacher in Fond du Lac,
WI. I got started with Haiku because my fellow teacher Liz Severson
had a class webpage and I wanted something better then her. A weak
reason but it led me to Haiku, which I'll forever be grateful. Our
district now has purchased a license and we've got over 2500 accounts
in less than a year of using the system. I guess I'm a Haiku Master,
but I think I'm more of just a teacher who found a great, easy tool to
make my teaching more effective and professional. I look forward to
sharing and hearing from Haiku users from all over the country.

Question: Is this Group just for a few people or will all users get
to jump in? I started a Google Group for just Fond du Lac teachers
using Haiku and was thinking of shutting that down and transferring
them all to this Group. Any ideas? Thanks.

The Group is open to anyone using Haiku. We simply invited a small
group initially just to get the ball rolling. We'd love to have more
people involved - the more the merrier, as they say - so feel free to
direct people here.

Thanks!

Hello everyone, I'm Matt DeSalvo, Technology Specialist at St. Francis
Catholic High School in Gainesville FL. This is our first year using
Haiku and it has been a huge improvement over our previous solution
(Edline) in terms of ease of use and aesthetics.
We are interested in hearing about other schools integration of Haiku
and their SIS, as that is our weak point of our setup currently. We
look forward to our teachers continuing to become more comfortable
with the interface and increase the amount of coursework and materials
available through their portals.

Hi! I am Melissa Cole, Director of Academic Technology at St. Mary's
Episcopal School in Memphis, Tn. We are new to Haiku this year. I am
actually testing this program with half of my 9-12 faculty and one 5th
grade teacher. It has been a very positive experience. My teachers are
actually using the program so they are often a step, or two, or three
ahead of me! I'm interested in knowing how teachers are using Haiku. I
want to continue to learn as much as I can about this program as I
expect we will continue to use Haiku and expand its presence at our
school.

Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. We were a Blackboard school
for years (8+?), then and now a Moodle Shop but Haiku is taking over
by storm, although subtly (-; Haiku has wider adoption, enthusiasm,
and overall support than any LMS we have ever used. We've been with
this fantastic web 2.0 software for ~ a year and faculty are our best

understated, champion of all things 21C. We look forward to

Hi my name is Jenna Ream and I am a Haiku enthusiast! I am in Boulder/
Denver Colorado and am jealous of all of you actively using haiku
because I think it is an amazing tool! I used to teach with haiku for
a small alternative licensure program, but now am working for the
University of Colorado where I teach online and hybrid, unfortunately
using eCollege. I take any opportunity I can to move my students to
haiku. I keep advocating for the small organizations with whom I
work, and my kids school to recognize the ease and flexibility of
haiku so hope to be using it more again soon in the future!

Hello everyone.
My name is Tony Perez and I am the Director of Technology at Atlanta
Girls' School.  We are an 11 year old independent, 6-12 school.  From
the day the school opened we have been a purpose-built one-to-one
school.  As Georgia's only Apple Distinguished School, our faculty
have become known for their innovative and authentic use of
technology
in the classroom.  After a six month search, we began
trialling Haiku
with select teachers last year and fully implemented
the LMS in August
of this year.  We were highly influenced by the
Haiku experience of
the Online School for Girls (of which AGS is a
charter member) and
wanted to send a shout out to Molly Rumsey -
thank you Molly for
connecting us with Bryan and the rest of the
Haiku team!  Despite my
assurances that Haiku really was "that easy,"
faculty went in to pre-
planning with a bit of trepidation, knowing
that they had two days to
move their classes online with Haiku.  I
confess to high-fiving my
team when every single teacher was up in
Haiku and ready to teach
after one day.  Training, design, upload and
import roster - it was
that easy!  Since then we have stressed the
Haiku system, going over
in storage and bandwidth in our first month.
 It has changed the way
or faculty teaches - from streaming audio and
video tin Spanish 1A to
collaborative note taking in AP World
History.  We have begun
developing Haiku-based "portals" for our
school board, media center,
admission and sports departments,
allowing us to send users to a
single page from which to leap off in
to schedules, custom teacher-
requested research pages, tech info
and, up next - clubs.  Haiku has
become our home on the web!  I am
looking forward to learning from
each of you and to sharing what we
have learned.  Cheers everyone!

Hi all.
My name is Mike Gwaltney and I teach for the Online School for Girls
(see Molly Rumsey's post above), and at Marlborough School in Los
Angeles, Ca.
As Molly said, we use Haiku at OSG. Meanwhile, we have adopted it as
our official (but optional) LMS at Marlborough. We have about 40
teachers using it at various levels of depth and sophistication. This
is Marlborough's first attempt at using a full LMS and all our users
are reporting that they find it easy to use and fun too. I'm a
technology integration specialist/coach to other Marlborough teachers
and I have been conducting workshops for our faculty on how to use
Haiku, and on pedagogical considerations for teaching blended classes.
I really like how elegant Haiku is compared to Blackboard or Moodle.
For the typical front-line teacher, it seems to be about the best LMS
available today.
I'm looking forward to learning from everyone here, and to
collaborating with you all. I'm very interested in educational
technology and its possibilities for democratizing knowledge.
I'm active on Twitter and would love to connect there too
(@MikeGwaltney).
Cheers.

Hi Elijah,

Welcome to Haiku! When using wikiprojects, a lot depends on your goal. Wikiprojects can be set up as one project for a class, section, group, or individual with varying levels of privacy and accessibility on each. Since you've said that you want students to work individually, I'd suggest setting up an individual project. Each student will be able to log in individually and control her own notes and you'll be able to see who's spilling along well in class. As an option, you can allow the rest of the class to view other students' notes.

HI, Dave Brubaker from Delaware Valley Friends School near Philadelphia, PA.  I am just beginning a pilot for my school, after a few teachers gave glowing reports about Haiku.  Since our SIS is PowerSchool, I am interested in interoperability between the systems to make the systems management a bit smoother.  We recently started using the NWEA MAP testing system which uses a similar export-import method of maintaining currency, and it would be great to have our other systems such as Follett-Destiny Library system, Silverpoint website management system, and Safari Montage do such things, a very big holiday wish indeed.  My role is the directing of these academic systems, and enhancing our assistive technologies program since all our students have learning differences, this a reason to have an agile friendly interface for an online course system.  So I look forward to seeing how our teachers and students interact with Haiku.  They have the ultimate say in these issues no matter how much I may think I have the perfect solution; they have proved themselves right time and time again!

Far from being a "master," I'd love to connect with any history teachers who "have been there and done that" so that I don't have to reinvent the wheel. Also wonder if it is possible to set up an interscholastic "classroom" featuring a common discussion thread. Our theme for the year is the continuing definition and development of American identity. Just a thought.

Hello, Erica!

Welcome to the Haiku Users Group! I'm very sorry to hear that you've been having trouble with Google Drive attachments and with HTTPS. For what it's worth, both of these problems are actually external to Haiku - though in some ways, that just makes them more frustrating!

My apologies, Erica, for the fact that you're seeing some of this information twice, but I thought it might be worth re-posting here:

  • As discussed in this Haiku Users Group thread, Google is having an intermittent problem with downloaded PDF files displaying a "clear cache and cookies" messages instead of the actual document. These PDFs are the source for several types of Google Doc attachment in Haiku, so sometimes when students attach Google files to the Dropbox, or when teachers attach PDF copies of Google files to Blocks, they get the "clear cache and cookies" PDF, too. This is happening to Google users outside of Haiku, too, so for the time being there is much to do but wait for a fix from Google.
  • As discussed in this Users Group thread, the mixed-content messages Erica's referring to stem from embedding HTTP content in an HTTPS page. In late August, Firefox started displaying these mixed-content warnings, meaning that all major web browsers now show these messages by default. This can cause problems when users embedded HTTP content in Haiku, which (like most secure web services) uses HTTPS. This Haiku Knowledgebase article describes a workaround for end-users, but for security reasons it's generally best to use HTTPS content only. (Recently, most web services have started using embed codes that are compatible with either HTTP or HTTPS. YouTube is an example.) In any case, these mixed-content warnings aren't Haiku-specific: they're universal to anyone trying to embed HTTP content on an HTTPS page.
Of course, if any users out there have some ideas about solutions or workarounds, we'd love to hear about them in the threads I linked to above!

Cheers,
Justin

Hello everyone!

I just got pointed to this group by Justin at the Haiku support team - thanks!

My name is Paul and I'm the MSHS Tech Coordinator for the United Nations International School in Hanoi, Vietnam.  We're transitioning this year from a Sharepoint based LMS to Haiku, and since this is just my first year out here it's been a little bit crazy.  We love Haiku, but a combination of poor international internet connections, uneven hardware, unnecessary TMG rules, buggy web filtering, and changes with Haiku scripts have caused some difficulties.  Still, hopefully by next year we'll have ironed most of them out.

Right now the big task I'm taking on is trying to figure out how to adapt Haiku's gradebook to our Inter Baccalaureate (IB) frame work.  We use both the Middle Years Program (MYP) and the Diploma Program (DP).  I know that Haiku is interested in working with more IB school in the near future, but I'm a little nervous about being in beta-testing with all of this.  If any of you guys work in IB schools as well, we should get together and talk about how to work through this.

Cheers,
Paul

Welcome Paul!
My friend and former ASDubai colleague, Tarique is new at your school this year as well!  Say hello for me!   We're not IB, but I'm working on Standards Based Grading here.

Hello everybody! Looks like we are bringing this thread back! My name is Nick. I am the LMS Administrator and Instructional Designer for a collaborative of Montessori teacher educator programs (TEP). My home program is Seton Montessori Institute. One of our collaborative partners is in Chicago while the other is in New York. I live right outside of Boston. We just entered our second year with Haiku and things are going well. We talked about it the other week that anything that could have been considered an “issue” was not something critical, particularly how fast things get solved.  It is a stark contrast to using Bb 9.1 for my other job. I am also a Senior Lecturer at Lesley University where I teach face to face, but also hybrid and online. For Lesley I also develop the online psychology courses.
