Do you want to turn subtitles on and off while you're streaming Netflix? Netflix offers closed captioning in English along with some supported languages depending on the movie or show. It will only take a few short steps to locate the subtitle menu and toggle it on and off. This wikiHow will teach you how to manage your Netflix subtitles on desktop, mobile app, streaming device, and gaming consoles.

A nice benefit of subtitles and closed captions on Hulu is that you can choose English or Spanish, when available, format captions, and each profile can manage captions independently. They can also be turned on and off based on the content being watched.

Cox Contour TV is a cable service from Cox Enterprises. Cox also offers a streaming device that works with any TV and provides access to Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and other streaming services.

A streaming device, aka streaming media player, is a physical piece of hardware. It connects to your TV through the HDMI port and uses your internet connection to stream online content to your TV, making it possible to access all your favorite services in one location.

You can turn captions for Roku on or off for the device itself or within individual channels that you download. Note that the availability of captions through Roku depends on the service provider offering them.

I have a Roku Streaming Stick and I use captioning at all times. Several days ago I noticed that when I turn the TV off and then on again, or switch streaming services (like Netflix to Acorn TV) the captioning has been turned off. I have to turn it back on every time. Anyone else with this issue lately?

In addition to making sure the closed captions are turned on in your Roku device, we would recommend making sure that the channel itself has the settings set to be toggled on as each channel may have their own settings.

I've started having the same problem. No issues since I installed the stick last summer. I've started using Sling and every time I switch between Sling and any Hulu, Amazon, etc. the closed caption is turned off. I have cc set to Yes on everything.

Mine has started doing this do every show I change to on hbomax I have to put closed captioning always but still goes off on any episode or movie and also when I switch between apps it goes off it use to always stay on

My TCL Roku TV and my Roku 4 are both doing this. I am hearing impaired so I need this for all channels. Every time I turn off the TV, I have to re-enable in Roku settings. It is a Roku issue likely in the last update. It works across all platforms. I tried several to prove this. It is easy to fix but this is completely new and definitely Roku. With their wonderful customer service we have to get on these forums and wait for days for a solution. If ever.

I have closed captioning on and I will start an app (any streaming app, doesnt matter) and the closed captioning will come on for a minute, maybe 2 and then turn off on its on. I have to exit and go back into settings (where it still says its on) and toggle it off and on again. Then it works for another minute or two and turns off on its own again

Just set up my newest Roku and it appears it is just Netflix with the problem. Captioning is black text and appears, but the show I am watching has very dark video. Tried another stream and the captioning is as I have changed it in settings. Tried reset but there is no difference.

I appreciate your response, however, I had already done all of those steps before contacting this site. My old device blew during a storm so I am not a newbe to Roku .. and the captioning worked fine on my old device .. and only appears not to work on Netflix (I have not tried every channel but perhaps I should check all of them?). The captioning remains black on Netflix only and will not change. Since I rely on the CC feature this is getting quite frustrating.

If the issue persists on one channel after attempting the troubleshooting steps and videos from other channels play fine, contact the channel provider's customer support team to report the issue and get help. The channel developers themselves maintain channels on Roku. In this case, an issue within that specific channel likely needs to be addressed with an update from them.

hey! the issue has been driving me absolutely crazy and i have found that it works when i have captions ALWAYS OFF in my settings on roku. you have to manually turn the captions on in each streaming app, but then they work! i hope this works for everyone else

As has been covered very many times, father in law has just gotten sky stream but needs subtitles Ive followed the power off fix a few times with no success. The next fix is to complete a master reset, which I'll do tonight.

@SuperJohnG What issue are you having with the subtitles. The way the subtitles work and are activated will depending on the source app of where the broadcast is being watched. For example turning on subtitles for live channels and Skys own on demand programmes is different from turning on subtitles for shows within IPlayer or ITV X.

@SuperJohnG Before you take any drastic action like a factory reset I assume you have turned the subtitles on at Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles. This will give subtitles for Sky programmes but the Apps (iPlayer, ITVX etc) all need subtitles turned on from within the app. Unfortunately each app achieves this by different procedures.

Also, subtitles can be turned on or off for specific programmes you are currently watching by selecting the button with the 3 white dots (just below the power button) on your remote. Your selection will turn off when you change channels. If there is no subtitle option it means the specific programme is does not have them available.

@SuperJohnG1 I would have suggested escalating your post but unfortunately Sky will only talk to the account holder whether by phone or an online chat. Consequently this option would not work. Hopefully someone who uses subtitles will be able to offer you some additional information.

@kp50 Check your settings at Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles. This will give subtitles for Sky programmes but the Apps (iPlayer, ITVX etc) all need subtitles turned on from within the app. Unfortunately each app achieves this by different procedures.

If you do find a solution (whether through escalation or not) please post it back here as I am aware that some others are having a similar issue. In particular @SuperJohnG1 on another thread but his post can't be escalated.

@SuperJohnG1 I have posted to another similar thread and tagged you so that you can find it. I don't feel comfortable escalating your post as I imagine I would be in breach of Superuser rules as I am aware that you are not the account holder.

This has been an ongoing problem ever since the puck was introduced and it is incredibly irritating for people such as myself who rely on them. All my 7 pucks (6 original and 1 replacement) had to have a factory reset.

I cannot turn off subtitles (closed captioning) for one of my three chromecast devices that are used to support my usage of YouTube TV and other apps such as Netflix on my TV. The subtitles are showing up regardless of which app is in use. I've tried everything in settings for both the apps and for the TVs themselves. I even bought a new TV, believing it was a fault of the TV. But, surprisingly, even the new TV continued to display the closed captioning. So next, I switched the chromecast devices between TVs. Lo and behold, the unwanted closed captioning followed the switched (faulty) chromecast device! So, it's clearly the one single chromecast device that is causing the closed captioning. There is no resolution I've found on any help sessions, searches, etc. I've seen other posts where a person has been frustrated in not getting resolution, but I've now done sufficient experimentation to isolate the only remaining possible issue. It is not a TV nor app setting as I've verified I can watch TV without closed captioning on any two of my three TVs that are not using the (faulty) chromecast device without changing any other settings. I now believe it is a faulty chromecast device itself, but am willing to hear if there is some other resolution or means to fix my faulty chromecast device. If true, how do I get a replacement?

I finally resolved my problem myself. For anyone having issues with closed captioning being mysteriously turned on, understand there are closed caption settings that can be initialized for many layers of your viewing experience. I've fiddled with them at the TV-level, for Google TV at a general level, and for individual apps. I finally discovered a closed caption setting at the YouTube TV app level that was just a down-arrow search and selection for closed captioning. It was simple to re-set, but if you get frustrated by all the other options you have for turning on/off closed captioning, just relax and keep trying other options.
