With internet options being so lousy on the west side of the lake, I
was thinking if folks with decent connectivity would get FON routers,
folks w/out broadband could really benefit. Eg, part timers wouldn't
be online enough to justify a broadband contract, but if there were
hotspots around the hills they wouldn't be without service on the
weekends.

Check out www.fon.com. Folks who join and connect a FON access point
to their network get free access to everyone elses FON access points.
Folks who don't join FON can still access FON hotspots for a fee.
Part of that fee gets kicked back to the FON member.

The cost of the equipment is around $40 + s/h, but there are promotion
codes to get it for ~$11 (delivered).

If there's much interest, it might even make sense for the HAH Club to
procure the equipment, and provide it to volunteers who have
broadband. All the profit could go back to HAH to offset (or exceed)
the costs of the equipment.
