Dear Lissa,

The CPSD superintendent has approved the attached electronic flyer about Belmont World Film's Family Festival, which takes place in Cambridge, Arlington, and Belmont from January 17-20, and supports the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in both English and foreign language.

Although films are for people of any age, they are geared mainly to children age 2-12 and their families. Films are in English and multiples languages with subtitles (read aloud through headphones for young and struggling readers). This year's festival features films and stories from ten different countries (the US included), many based on international beloved children's books. Since it's Martin Luther King Day weekend, there's also a program of short films on Monday in tribute to his life, legacy, and contemporaries. Best of all: the festival trailer was produced by students in Cambridge's Media Arts Program!

Festival highlights include:

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show Storytime: A live, audience participatory puppet show and story time featuring two Eric Carle stories followed by a photo opportunity with the caterpillar puppet (age 2-6)
  • Master Animator Cinzia Angelini, TEDx speaker and lead story artist on Abominable, The Minions Movie, Despicable Me 3, Spider-Man 2, and more, will conduct a  workshop on drawing the Minions character and another on storyboarding for animated films, and will participate in a Q&A after two of her films (Age 5+)
  • Hacker (East Coast Premiere): After his mother, a scientist working on a secret project, disappears under mysterious circumstances, the orphaned boy, an expert computer hacker, discovers that she may still be alive (age 9+).
  • Jacob, Mimmi and the Talking Dogs (North American Premiere): Will an imaginative boy, his know-it-all cousin, and a pack of talking dogs save their romantic neighborhood in Riga, Latvia from unwelcome change? (Age 5+)
  • Terra Willy: Unexplored Planet (US Premiere). What do you get when you cross the heartwarming encounters in WALL-E with the rich and colorful animation of Fantasia? Terra Willy, a masterpiece of animation from FranceQq (Age 5+)!
  • Amazing & Adorable: Short Films about Animals from the Francophone World: Top animators in France, Belgium, and Switzerland have created adorable and colorful short films with subjects such as friendship, acceptance, and perseverance (Age 5+).
  • Arctic Camels, (North American Premiere): Nine-year-old Torarin and his sister are over the moon when their parents bring home two baby camels to live with them in the northernmost city in the world, but they must travel to Mongolia to find someone to train them (Age 9+).

Thank you in advance for sharing the information with your students and their parents. If you would like print copies or an electronic version of the full color brochure to distribute, I will be happy to drop some buy or email one to you. In the meantime, please contact me if you have any questions, or if you'd like to organize a trip for your school with discounted tickets.

Ellen
