==============================================================
Q: What is a FAQ list?

FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. However, this list is not
limited to frequently asked questions, but rather *any* Space:1999
related questions and answers.
==============================================================
Q: How do I subscribe to the Space:1999 e-mailing list?

Send an e-mail message to space-199...@quack.kfu.com and ask to be
added to the list. This is a human read mail account so there is no
specific syntax for your request, however be polite. ;-)

Once you are added to the list you will receive a short file of
instructions and information. PLEASE READ IT! Especially the part
about directing messages and administrivia to the correct place.
==============================================================
Q: How do I UN-subscribe from the Space:1999 e-mailing list?

Send an e-mail message to space-199...@quack.kfu.com and ask to be
removed from the list. This is a human read mail account so there is no
specific syntax for your request, again, be polite. ;-) Please do NOT
send unsubscribe to the mailing list as your request WILL be ignored.
If your web browser supports forms, you can also unsubscribe at
http://www.kfu.com/~nsayer/space-1999/
==============================================================
Q: What about list netiquette?

This list has very few rules, please abide by them.
- Please try to keep subjects on topic, and that means Space: 1999 and
closely related items only. If you must post something that is
"off topic" (or suspect it might be) please include at the start of the
SUBJECT LINE "(off topic)" to give those with lesser net resources the
opportunity to skip that message. If you wish to respond to off topic
issues, please do so in private e-mail.

- Please edit the subject line to fit with the message. As threads develop
the original subject line is often no longer relevant.

- When quoting from previous messages, edit the text to include only those
points you wish to respond to. Nobody wants to read very long messages
containing many previously quoted postings and then your message
amounting
to "Me too!" at the end. A little judicious editing can go along way.

- This list has always prided itself on the civility of it's subscribers.
Please do not flame on this list! If you absolutely must respond with
ire,
personal follow up email is the place, and not the Space: 1999 mailing
list. Please remember that you can also send off topic follow ups to the
original sender! However, please refrain from harrassment or gratuitous
profanity even in private responses. List members should feel free to
debate and to disagree but to treat one another with courtesy and
respect.
It is unfortunate to have to unsubscribe someone from the list due to
intollerable behaviour.

- Please do not send birthday greetings and the like to the list. It is not
the list you are greeting, so send the message to person personally. This
is a serious contributer to wasted bandwidth and the signal to noise
ratio.
==============================================================
Q: Where can I post binaries/non-text files? (*)

First of all do *not* post them to the mail list, this is very
inconsiderate
and the list maintainer, Nick Sayer, has specifically forbidden it.

Please feel free to post them to UseNet News in the group hactar.space-1999

Alternatively mail them to John Flemming <Jo...@COLDNORTH.Com> who will make
them available to the rest of the world! John specifies the following:
> PC file format
> Zipped
> An email attachment or
> UUencoded email
> Email subject line of "FTP FILE"
> Email body with a brief description of what the file is, size, name,
>format, and any info that you want for a caption (email address, url,
>credit, etc.) Please, in this info, don't include any other info, or ask
any
>questions. Send a seperate email for those purposes. Thanks.
==============================================================
Q: Is there a UseNet Newsgroup?

Yes, it is called hactar.space-1999 and it receives the mailing list in
digest format each week and the monthly FAQ. Messages posted to this
newsgroup are not echoed to the mailing list.
To access UseNet News you need a news-reader, the details of which are
out of the scope of this FAQ list.

Q: I can't use FTP, how can I download the files using e-mail? (*)

You can get files from FTP sites using plain old e-mail! Send an
e-mail to <ftp...@decwrl.dec.com> or <bit...@pucc.princeton.edu>
and put the word HELP in body of your message.
If you don't understand the instructions, mail me. I can explain
things to a four-year-old! ;)

Also for information on how to use other mail servers send e-mail to
<list...@SimTel.Coast.NET> with the following commands in the body
of the message. Do not include a signature since it may confuse servers.
get garbo-mailserver.info
get simtel-mailserver.info
==============================================================
Q: Who is on the Space:1999 e-mailing list?

This information is regarded as confidential (until you make a posting of
course). However people who would like others to know that they are
"connected" have submitted profiles of themselves to George Lee
(Luck...@aol.com) who is the maintainer of the Online Alpha Personnel List
and who posts the list at the begining of each month. E-mail George if you
wish to be included on the list and include the following information:
email address, full name, date of birth, country of origin, current place
of work, occupation, snail mail address, memorabilia and/or any comments
you wish to make. Over 100 list subscribers have so far submitted profiles
of themselves.
==============================================================
Q: Is the e-mailing list available in Digest format?

Yes. Send a request to Eddie Lotter <lot...@loop.com> and ask to be added
to the Digest group. Once you are part of this group you will receive
the mail list in digest format, until you ask Eddie to remove you.
==============================================================
Q: Is the e-mailing list archived?

Yes, since November 1994. The monthly digests are available on the
und.ac.za archive. As of June 27th 1995, this email listing will not be
available on the archive. The current digests are being archived and
will eventually be made available on-line.
==============================================================
Q: What other Gerry Anderson mailing lists are there?

To subscribe send e-mail to:

To: LIST...@LISTS.PIPEX.COM
Subject: none
Message:
SUBSCRIBE FAB-L yourName

or

SUBSCRIBE FAB-UFO yourName

The addresses for sending messages are FA...@lists.pipex.com or

(Thanks Marc Martin <ma...@wln.com>)
==============================================================
Q: What is "FAB"?

"FAB" is the name of the magazine published by the Gerry Anderson fan club
in England. The fan club is appropriately called "FANDERSON". Anyone can
join Fanderson by writing to them at:

Fanderson. P.O. Box 93, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF1 1XJ, England

They do not have the ability to accept credit cards so payment must be made
with a check/money order payable in English Pounds. I believe this cost me
about $40.00 for one year of membership but I am not sure. For more
information your best bet is to write to Fanderson directly and enclose two
International Reply Coupons (available at your local post office) and ask
for a membership application, as their are many membership options.

Q: What future conventions are planned?

Here's the latest news about the big Space: 1999 convention planned for
1999. It will be held from Friday Sept 10 thru Monday Sept 13, 1999 - a
four day gathering to observe and celebrate the event which launched the
Alphans' adventures. It will be held in Los Angeles, California (exact
location will be announced at a later date). The goal is to bring together
as many of the cast and crew members as possible for the weekend. There
will be a number of events during the four days, including guest lectures,
photo and autograph sessions, art show and competition, art auction,
charity auction, fan club meetings, film room, dealer's room and much, much
more. Plan now to attend as September 13, 1999 will never happen again.
Spread the word to all your Space: 1999 friends. Don't let them miss this
event either!

Breakaway: The Convention
c/o Ms. Terry S. Bowers. 603 N. Clark St. River Falls, WI 54022 USA

(Thanks Jenny Lobb <jl...@guvax.georgetown.edu>)

SpaceCon XII will take place the weekend of September 13-14, 1997 in
Portland, Oregon at the Portland Days Inn/City Center. Confirmed guest
appearance by Barry Morse, who will also perform his hit one-man show
"Merely
Players." Confirmation is pending from Barbara Bain and Nick Tate. Events
will include art show, dealers room, video presentations, fan club
meetings,
and much, much more! Your two pass will include all convention events AND
admission to "Merely Players" nearby at the World Trade Centre Theatre. A
special "Brunch with the Stars" is scheduled for Sunday morning, for an
additional fee. For a detailed brochure with information on all events,
please send your snail mail address to: SpaceCon XII, 3196 SE 136th Avenue,

Q: What are the Space: 1999 films?

There were four films made from eight episodes. The first being
"Destination Moonbase Alpha" which was the joining together of the two
parter The Bringers Of Wonder. "Alien Attack" (featuring Breakaway & War
Games), "Cosmic Princess" (The Metamorph & Space Warp) and "Journey Through
The Black Sun" (Black Sun & Collision Course) soon followed. The films
syndication rights caused problems for the shows video release in England
and these eight episodes are not available in the series release at this
time. However the 4 films are available on video cassette.

(Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)
==============================================================
Q: What episodes are available on laserdisc/video?

Australia recently began releasing "budget priced videos" which contain one
episode on each cassette. In England forty episodes are available spread
over twenty video cassettes. The eight missing episodes are those listed
above that were released as "films". Rumours abound that with the "film"
rights expiration, Polygram will remaster and rerelease the entire forty
eight episodes. In the US the situation was slightly different. All
episodes except the two parter The Bringers Of Wonder were available on
laserdisc. These sold poorly and were soon deleted. In Japan the first
season was made available in four box sets each containing three laserdiscs
and numerous printed inserts. These too are now deleted. For a more
detailed listing of what is/was available worldwide on video and laserdisc
see the videography.txt file on the archives.

(Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)
==============================================================
Q: Where can I get these laserdiscs/videos?

Unfortunately, as of the date of this file, Space:1999 is out of print
and it is highly unlikely that you will find any new ones. Your best
bet is to browse any and every second hand video store you come across.
It is also a good idea to monitor the mailing list and UseNet newsgroups
for tips from people who have seen some available.
I live in the hope that the entire series will be re-released when DVD
replaces LaserDiscs.
==============================================================
Q: What Space:1999 publications are there?

There are simply too many to list here. Have a look in the archives
mentioned earlier for the following files:
- novels.txt (Thanks Raja Thiagarajan <sthi...@nickel.ucs.indiana.edu>)
- books.txt (Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)
- publications.txt (Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)

==============================================================
Q: Where can I get old and new Space: 1999 memorabilia and toys?

The most obvious place to start is this list! Either post your 'Wants List'
or watch for subscribers 'For Sale' postings. Other net resources worthy of
consideration are the newsgroups rec.toys.misc and rec.arts.sf.marketplace.
In the U.S. various print publications exist to help the collector lighten
the load in his wallet, the best of these being Toy Shop. Other magazines
including ads from toy dealers include Action Figure News & Toy Review and
Action Figure Digest. All of these publications can be found with some ease
on newstands. North America also benefits from being far more organised
when it comes to weekend Toy Shows/Fairs. Check above mentioned
publications for listings as well as local newspapers.
In the UK, the toy fair and show scene is a little more fledgling but seems
to be gaining ground. For the UK equivilant of Toy Shop try Model &
Collectors Mart which can be easily found at most high street newsagents.

Over the past few years there has been a phenominal rise in interest in all
things Anderson. This unfortunalty pushes the price of memorabilia up.
However, there are still a great number of bargins to be found out there.
Whilst Space: 1999 has lagged behind other Anderson shows in terms of new
merchandise, occasionally new items emerge. The most recent are two
different designed phone cards and these are available from:
P & J Promotions Dept 2,
P.O. Box 23, Shoreham-By-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG, England.
Phone: +44 (0)1273 463017
Fax: +44 (0)1273 452607.
The designs featured are, two docked Eagles landing on a pad and the other
being a shot of Koenig, Russell and Maya.

As the supply of memorabilia is erratic and usually has a very short shelf
life, at this time I have omitted any sort of comprehensive listing of
stores that stock/have carried 1999 related items. Other than contacting
stores already advertising in collectors publications, the following two
stores are always a good place to start any search for memorabilia and
collectors pieces:

Engale Marketing
332 Lytham Road, Blackpool, Lancashire, FY4 IDW, England
Phone: +44 (0)1253 400321

Comet Miniatures
46-48 Lavendar Hill, London, SW11 SRH, England
Phone: +44 (0)171 228 370

(Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)
==============================================================
Q: What Space: 1999 merchandise has been available?

Whilst containing some ommissions, Dennis Nicholson's GERRY ANDERSON
MEMORABILIA GUIDE, is the ultimate authority on what merchandise has been
released. This 398 page book is a collectors bible for all things Anderson.
There is a 26 page section devoted to Space: 1999, although other sections
also cover Space: 1999 items. Initially, the book was only available via
mail order from -
Traffic Collectibles.
Box 193, Malvern Road, Toorak, 3142, Australia
Fax +61 3 5212944
but it's distribution now seems to be quite widespread with it's appearance
on many racks in toy & book shops.

(Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)
==============================================================
Q: Are there any Space: 1999 hardware blue prints available?

Other blueprints that have been published include:

binder and are meant as to supplement it.

(Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)
==============================================================
Q: What soundtracks are available for Space:1999?

The first soundtrack to be released was simply entitled "Space: 1999" and
issued by RCA (cat # ABL1-1422) for the North American market only. This
circumvented some problems with it's issue, as it's reported it was
compiled and released without Barry Gray's consent.

The only other official release was a 7" single in Japan (Disco-Mate
Records DSK-112) featuring on the A side the Japanese theme music (which is
dreadful!) and on the B side the closing credits theme.

More commonly available - but equally as hard to listen to were two vinyl
albums and two singles released by Power Records.
- LP Space: 1999 (cat # 8162) Breakaway / Death's Other Dominion / Mission
of
the Darians
- LP Space: 1999 (cat # 8179) Return To The Begining / End Of Eternity /
Dragon's Domain / It Played So Softly On The Ear
- 7" Breakaway (cat # PR29)
- 7" Return To The Begining (cat # PR32)
The singles were housed in a comic that contained the story so the listener
could read along with the record. The actors featured on these releases are
not the original cast members.

Other CD releases containing 1999 music are

- F.A.B. - Music From The T.V. Shows by Barry Gray from Silva Screen 1992,
cat # FILMCD 124 Made in the ECC. Track 2 is the opening music lasting
3.37. Except it's Year Two by Derek Wadsworth. This *not* the actual
theme
music but the Royal Philharmonic Orchestras version. It's a resonable
resemblance.

- Music From Space City
from Fanderson, cat # FANSC3
This is actually the soundtrack to "Alphacon - The Video" and stuff from
other Fandercons. But it's got a nice pic of Marty 'n' Babs on the front.

(Thanks Ande Tucker <a_tu...@deltanet.com>)

- Neil Norman and His Cosmic Orchestra have re-recorded a number of theme
tracks on his "Greatest Science Fiction Hits" volumes I-III. These are
available on the GNP Crescendo label (GNPD2128, GNPD2133, and GNPD2163
respectively). These discs are copyright (c) 1986 and so may be out of
print by now. Norman does competent, but different than the original,
arrangements using guitar, synthesizer, theremin, keyboards, drums, bass,
and occassionally trumpets, trombones, reeds, and French horns as needed.
The tracks of interest are:
Volume I: "Space: 1999" (Gray) Weibeck ASCAP 1:58
Volume II: "Space: 1999 II" (Derek Wadsworth) 1:31

(Thanks Victor Volkman <victor....@hal9k.com>)

- Geoff Love and his Orchestra - Star Wars and Other Space Themes
1975. Catalogue No. (Music for Pleasure Limited) MFP 50355

- Power Themes. Catalogue No. CDSR022

Q: Whatever happened to Victor Bergman?

In the book The Making of Space: 1999 (written by Tim Heald, published in
the U.S. by Ballantine in Nov 1976, ISBN 0-345-25265-9-195), there is a
reference to some of the changes being made to the script of "The
Metamorph" (the 1st episode of the second season). At this point, Tony
Anholt's character was called "Simon Hays." To quote from pages 104 - 105:

For example, it was only on the blue pages that reference was made to the
disappearance of Bergman, when in Scene 146 Simon says (almost to himself)
"I wish Bergman was here."
SANDRA (nods): But he isn't.
SIMON: One lousy space suit with a faulty helmet and Victor had to be in
it.
SANDRA (gently): We can't bring him back, Simon.

Without this Bergman's absence would go unexplained and, apart from
questions of coherence and continuity, there would have been countless fan
letters asking what on Earth (or moon) had happened to him. (If you're
wondering what "blue pages" means: When they make changes to the final
shooting script, they print them on blue paper, so people can find the
changes quickly.) Of course, they made further changes later on and dropped
these lines. IMHO, they really should have left those lines in (and
explained what happened to Morrow and Kano, while they were at it.

Q: What is the Japanese Super Visual Guide Book?

Does anyone know what the Japanese Guidebook is? Well, let me share this
knowledge with you all. It came out about 1981 timeframe and it is the most
comprehensive little photo book ever. It has over 800 little color photos
and over 500 black and white photos. It starts with a pull down Maya poster
on the front and on the reverse of the poster is an Eagle shooting that
ship from "The Last Enemy" episode (a popular promotional shot since they
never really did that). Then it shows sections of Moonbase Alpha, the
people, all the guest stars, their popular equipment, all the aliens, all
the alien spaceships, and other scenes from the title of the second year
Main theme.

That's just the color section; the B/W section consists of the episode
synopsis with about eight photos from each episode, the blue print section
consists of blueprints of Alpha-Moonbase, the Eagle and lots of different
merchandise from Japan, America, and England. It's a beautiful book and
it's the most comprehensive. There is just one slight problem, though, it
is written all in Japanese. And it is backwards like a normal Japanese
book.
