I was long vexed in trying to come up with a logical explanation of the
"mysterious fever" that Maya suffered in "Space Warp." But then I came
on an answer that may explain it AND her father Mentor's duplicitous
behavior.
It may, in fact, be linked to their metamorphic powers. We have seen
Maya turn into many forms. Some larger, but some also very much smaller
than her "at rest" form. If she changes into an insect, which we have
seen her do, where does her body mass go to? It doesn't get compressed,
for then the smaller form would weigh the same as the normal. Could a
bee that weighed one hundred pounds (at least) fly? Of course not. So
where does the mass go?
In the Murky World of Pseudo- and Quasi-Physics in SF™ I would
postulate that the mass is lost and gained from another dimension. When
Maya starts the morphing process she becomes able to tap into this "mass
dimension" to deposit or withdrawal whatever mass the form she has
decided upon requires. Is there any size limitations? We were never
told, or shown. I would say the further the morphed form is in mass from
her at rest state the more energy it takes to maintain the morphed form.
How does this correlate to her illness in "Space Warp" and Mentor's
madness, as well? To be able to tap into the mass dimension, she must
have something akin to a micro-space warp in herself. This may make her
susceptible to hitherto unknown effects of warped space/time. She would
be sensitive to their presence and it might resonate or conflict with
her own "internal" warp and cause mental aberrations. This might also
explain Mentor's twisted state: Helena did say they had just passed
through a space warp before reaching Psychon. Its proximity could have
distorted Mentor's mind into the monster he became. A heavy price to
pay, indeed.
