Cultural Center News
Why does
Hillsborough---famous for its
artists and writers and gifted
school kids---have no Cultural
Center? Smaller towns claim
gleaming facilities and enjoy
the economic benefits to the tax
base that follow.
Meanwhile, our streets literally
dance. Last month, The
Hillsborough Arts Council’s
beautiful Hand
Made Parade lured over
500 participants to dance and
perform in the streets. Dressed
as dancing jumbies, animals,
birds , insects, plants and
more, Handmade Parade
participants created costumes
many theaters would envy.
Robin Van Lear, the executive
director of arts at the
Cleveland Museum of Art flew
into town to witness and
participate in this community
arts project. She described it
as 'extraordinary' and
'visionary'.
It was all done with volunteers
over the course of the summer in
workshops that begged for space
in studios, churches, backyards
and garages as the Arts Council
lacks a space to host
workshops.
This summer, as part of the new
Hillsborough
Jazz Festival, the Arts
Council hosted Jazz
workshops with recording
artists Lois Deloatch and John
Brown's Lincoln Center
programming. With the
understanding of these
consummate professionals we
offered these workshops outdoors
with tents. Imagine how much
more we could bring to the
community with an arts facility.
In addition, we hosted writing
and visual arts workshops
including a workshop with the
very generous author and 2010
Piedmont Laureate Zelda
Lockhart.
Imagine what we could accomplish
as a community with a dedicated
space... There are so many other
educational and theatrical
programs that volunteers are
eager to bring to
Hillsborough... but we lack a
facility.
On December 8, 2007 The
Hillsborough Arts Council hosted
an Art Summit to envision what
the arts would look like in
Hillsborough in the year 2013.
Since then artists, writers,
historians, and neighbors have
been meeting to explore how to
bring such a center to serve
central and northern Orange
County.
A committee was formed to create
'The Orange County Cultural
Center'. Although
donations to the Cultural Center
do not directly support the
Hillsborough Arts Council we
strongly encourage your support
of this initiative. The
Hillsborough Arts Council is
currently serving only as the
fiscal agent for the Orange
County Cultural Center.
Last year, the town issued an
official proclamation supporting
the establishment of a cultural
center. Upon recognizing that
the Whitted building auditorium
could potentially be used as an
interim cultural center, the
Hillsborough Tourism Board
offered a $10,000 grant if the
Cultural Center board could
raise matching funds by Jan 3,
2011 That goal has been reached;
however there is much work to be
accomplished.
Hillsborough needs a home for
the arts. Please add your
voice, energy and ideas as we
call for the creation of an
Orange County Cultural Center.
Thank you for supporting
community arts... it enriches
all of us!
