Upcoming Parlor Concerts
Creative Expressions
Cafe Music
A classical trio will perform Cafe Music for the third Parlor Concert at the Burnside House, 220 South Cameron Street in Hillsborough.
Cafe Music, featuring works of Paul Schoenfield, Antonin Dvorak as well as music of J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin, and others will be performed by the classical trio, Dr. Karen Allred, pianist of the music faculty at Meredith College in Raleigh with Dr. Edith Gettes, violin and Dr. Jason Thomas, cello.
Alfred received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from UNC‑Greensboro in May 2007. She holds a Master of Music degree from the UNC-Chapel Hill, where she studied with Michael Zenge. She joined the faculty of Meredith College in 1989. Further studies include work with Taubman techniques.
Edith Gettes began violin lessons as a Suzuki Student at the age of 5. She went on to major in music at UNC and received a Masters Degree in Music Performance from Indiana University. Her Post Graduate Study includes a Performer's Certificate from the Guild Hall School of Music and Drama in London, and Pedagogy study with Shinichi Suzuki in Matsumoto, Japan. She has appeared in many Orchestras and Chamber Music Festivals, including Spoleto (SC), Victoria Bach (Texas) and Music Around the Lakes (Michigan).
The Raleigh public schools introduced Jason Thomas to the cello. He began private studies with Luca DiCecco and graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, SUNY Stony Brook and UW Madison after studying with cellists Richard Kapuscinski and Bernard Greenhouse. Jason taught cello and performed orchestral and chamber music throughout the eastern United States and Western Europe
A reception sponsored by Weaver Street Market will follow the performance.

Corinne West and Joe Phelps
This Country, Folk Duo will perform Friday Evening at 8 pm April 23 at the Whitmore home 125 W Queen St.
Corinne West, a fourth generation Californian and musician who performs upwards of200 shows each year, has a voice that simply soars. Using her powerfully eloquent voice, coupled with beautifully crafted songs - memorable both lyrically and melodically - she has fashioned a unique identity within American music’s acoustic/roots scene. Her latest record, 'The Promise', confirms West’s place among the finest young singer-songwriters
Kelly Joe Phelps has, over the course of eight CD’s and fifteen years of touring the world, established himself as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter with singular vision and fearless purpose. His mix of folk, blues, and jazz has won him praise from t he likes of Bill Frisell, Steve Earl, and Cameron Crowe. Kelly Joe has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered’ and ‘Prairie Home Companion’ as well as numerous BBC and other national radio shows throughout Europe, Australia and Japan.

Creative Expression Program 2010 Exhibit at the Hillsborough Arts Council GalleryLocal Artists Exhibition Opportunities
Each year up to 16 high school juniors from Cedar Ridge and Orange High are chosen to participate in the Creative Expression Program. Under the direction of Pip Merrick, the program matches highly motivated students with working artists as mentors in the completion of a creative project.
The exhibit of these independent projects will run from March 24th-April 23rd at the Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery. The Opening Reception will take place Friday, March 26th from 6-9 pm.

The Arts and Crafts Show is a juried show, sponsored by the Hillsborough Arts Council. Original, high quality, handcrafted items and art work by over 30 local artists will be displayed and available for sale on the lawn of the Visitors Center at 150 East King Street in downtown Hillsborough; April 17, 2010.
There will also be entertainment by great musicians throughout the day!
Art Cycle Spring Cleaning!Clean out your homes, garages, offices and studios. We need stuff. ArtCycle is one of our Education Committee Programs that collects and distributes donations of new and used supplies to be used in our local schools’ classrooms.Last Fridays

New Workshops at Moorefields
Starting in May, aspiring artists and writers, with the help of professional instructors, will learn and create in the unique setting of this historic estate. Moorefields was built in 1785 as the summer home of US Supreme Court Justice Alfred Moore of Wilmington. The house is situated amid 70 acres of pasture, woodland and lawn, an unique setting for a series of artists workshops this spring.
The Hillsborough Arts Council is thrilled to be able to offer this unique series of artists’ workshops.
