Free Spirit / Freedom Exhibit at the Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 22 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm


The show will continue from January 15, Martin Luther King Day, to March 12, 2011

Free Spirit Freedom will hold the reception for its inaugural exhibition of photographs exploring the history of the minority experience in Orange County at the Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery at 220 S. Churton St. from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22. Light refreshments will be served.

The inaugural exhibition will include photographs of people, places and documents that illuminate the history and culture of peoples of color of Hillsborough and Orange County. Focusing on the church, schools, politics and the arts, the exhibition will document the accomplishments of minority leadership in a collection of images recording the march forward of all minorities, including Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics and all peoples of color. The inaugural exhibition will be open to the public as part of the celebrations honoring Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday, Jan. 17.

                                                          Spirit imageA program of talks about Free Spirit Freedom and the inaugural exhibition will take place at the reception Saturday, Jan. 22, beginning at 2 p.m.

The principal speaker at the reception will be Walter Faribault Jr.
The Free Spirit Freedom inaugural exhibition will run from Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 17 until March 12.

HAC Gallery hours:
Tuesday through Saturday 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Closed Sunday & Monday (note that the gallery will be open for this special exhibit on Martin Luther King Day, Monday January 17th)

Recording artist Sally Spring in Concert
The Hillsborough Arts Council presents Sally Spring in a Parlor Concert on Sunday January 23, 2011 at 4:00 pm in Historic Hillsborough.

This is a very limited seating event.

The concert takes place in the Whitmore home located at 125 West Queen Street in Hillsborough.   Sally Spring, award-winning singer-songwriter will perform as a trio and feature several songs from her latest, critically-acclaimed album “Made of Stars”.

 We are truly fortunate to have this extraordinary talent come to Hillsborough and perform in such an intimate setting before embarking on a tour including Memphis, Nashville, and Austin.

Sally’s warm voice… rich, and haunting…  sets her apart from the crowd and explains her ascent to the top of the Americana radio charts in Europe in 2010 as well as similar charts in the US.  Additional info about Sally is available at her website.


Advanced tickets $18.00 to this limited-seating event will go quickly. They are available through the Hillsborough Arts Council Concerts web-page as well as the Art Council office located at 220 South Churton Street in Hillsborough.

HAC Gallery seeks artist submissions for 2011 gallery shows

Spread the word... Regional artists are encouraged to submit proposals now!
HAC Gallery is currently seeking artist submissions for six exhibitions.

Applications and proposals will be accepted for Four solo and/or two person exhibitions and two themed shows. Each show will last four weeks as part of the Art Walk during Last Fridays in Hillsborough. The selection committee will pair artists or grant a solo exhibition.
  • The four solo shows will be solo or two person exhibitions.
  • The two themed shows are:
"Gardens & the Natural World "
"Traditional Crafts – Past and Present Perspectives: Quilts, Woodcraft & Basketry,”

The deadline for applications is 5:00 pm, February 15, 2011. Take advantage of this opportunity and get your proposals in now!

Hillsborough Sculpture Tour call for submissions
Sculptors... don't miss this opportunity!
The deadline is approaching...
Sculptors are invited to enter Hillsborough Sculpture Tour 2011.
The sculpture will be exhibited at prominent locations throughout downtown Historic Hillsborough, NC. The tour, sponsored by the Hillsborough Arts Council, will occur mid-April through September 2011.
The Tour is open to all artists. A panel of judges will select 6 winning sculptures. Each winner will receive an honorarium of $750. At the closing of the tour two special awards will be announced: The Judges Choice Award and The People’s Choice Award.

Deadline for entries is January 17, 2011.

Guidelines for Art
Sculpture must be suitable for outdoor public display. It should be stable and free-standing. Artists will be expected to install their own sculptures the week before the tour begins and remove them the week after the tour ends leaving the site in its original condition.

Sites for Artwork
All locations will be within walking distance of downtown Historic Hillsborough. Selected pieces will be carefully sited to enhance the appearance and accessibility of the art and the site on which the art is located.

Arts and Crafts Show "Hillsborough Downtown" Call For Artists
This is a great opportunity for art and crafts artists to exhibit and sell their work in a juried show... applications are being accepted now!
The annual juried spring show will be held on the lawn of the visitors center in the heart of Historic Hillsborough on April 16, 2011.
Apply online here and mail your completed applications to the HAC 'Attention arts and crafts show' as soon as possible.
