Last Fridays Art Walk
February 25th Last Fridays Art Walk 6:00 – 9:00 pm
New this year is an extended season for the Hillsborough Arts Council’s Last Fridays Art Walk showcasing the talents of local artists in studios and galleries in downtown Hillsborough.
On Friday February 25, many venues will have artist and opening receptions from 6:00 to 9:00.
Brochures with a map of the Last Fridays Art Walk are available at any of the participating venues or at The HAC Art Walk website.
- Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery 220 South Churton Street Featuring 'FREE SPIRIT FREEDOM' an exhibition including photographs of people, places and documents that illuminate the history and culture of peoples of color of Hillsborough and Orange County. Focusing on the church, schools, politics and the arts, the exhibition will document the accomplishments of minority leadership in a collection of images recording the march forward of all minorities, including Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics and all peoples of color.
- Snowhill Tileworks 220 South Churton Street Featuring handmade ceramic tile and porcelain jewelry by Laura Johnson.
- ENO Gallery 100 South Churton Street Opening reception for the exhibition 'ANIMALS WE KEEP'. 10 artists exhibit their interpretations in paintings and sculpture: Michael Brown, Shannon Bueker, Morag Charlton Lisa Creed, Paul Hill, Mike Hoyt, Tinka Jordy, Jennifer Miller, Sally Sutton and Anthony Ulinski.
- The Hillsborough Artists Cooperative and The Skylight Gallery 102 West King Street Featuring work by studio artists Jayne Bomberg and Tom Guthrie (The Studio of Collective Effervescence), Jennifer E. Miller, Andrea DeGette, Jacquelin Liggins, and Tiffney Marley. The Skylight Gallery will be hosting the Media Arts Exchange which is opening in downtown Hillsborough. The Media Arts Exchange produces media projects and presents classes as well as individual instruction.
- The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts 121 North Churton Street Opening reception for the exhibition “ALL TOGETHER NOW'. Featuring collaborative works by the gallery’s member artists; including painting, metal sculpture, photography, blown glass, stained and fused glass, jewelry, turned wood, furniture, pottery, quilts and fiber arts.
The Hillsborough Arts Council, a non-profit organization supporting the arts in Hillsborough, with funding support in part from the Orange County Arts Commission and private contributions, sponsors the Last Fridays Art Walk program. Hillsborough Public Sculpture Tour Announcement
April 16, 2011 to Sept. 30, 2011.
A select group of juried contemporary sculptures will be exhibited in public areas in the heart of the historic district in downtown Hillsborough.
This is the inaugural exhibition of contemporary public sculpture in Historic Hillsborough, North Carolina. Sculptures will be available for sale.The Hillsborough Arts Council will present Hillsborough Sculpture Tour 2011. This will be the first time outdoor sculpture will be exhibited throughout downtown Historic Hillsborough. The tour will open April 16, the same day as the Hillsborough Arts Council’s Arts and Crafts Show. The sculptures will remain on exhibit until the end of September and will be available for sale.
All locations will be within walking distance of downtown Historic Hillsborough. Locations include Historic Burwell School, Eagle Masonic Lodge, the Hillsborough Police Station, Turnip Patch Park, the Hillsborough Visitors Center, and the Old Orange County Courthouse. Sculptures will be carefully sited to enhance the appearance and accessibility of the art and the site on which the art is located.
A 3-judge panel has selected 6 winning sculptures. The judges were Emily Kass, Director of the Ackland Art Museum; Jane Tyndall, owner of Tyndall Galleries; and Tinka Jordy, sculptor and co-owner of Eno Gallery.
The names of winning artists and events surrounding the opening of the tour and presentation of awards will be announced soon. Each winner will receive an honorarium of $750. In addition to cash awards, at the closing of the tour two special awards will be announced: The Judges Choice Award and The People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice Award will be made based on votes by spectators who pick up ballots and maps at the Hillsborough Visitors Center.
The Sculpture Tour is expected to draw artists and art lovers to Hillsborough to view, appreciate, and perhaps purchase the art. The Hillsborough Arts Council received grants from the Town of Hillsborough Tourism Board, the Orange County Arts Commission, and the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation to help fund this event.

Opening Reception for Free Spirit Freedom Exhibit Draws Overflow Crowd
It was a wintry day outside on Saturday, January 22nd, but there was plenty of warmth and enthusiasm inside the HAC Gallery. A diverse crowd of more than 60 people attended a reception
for Free Spirit Freedom’s Inaugural Exhibition. In the festive atmosphere, everyone mingled, sharing stories and learning more about one another.
Highlighting the afternoon’s events were opening remarks by Free Spirit Freedom co-founder, Renee Price, and by Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens;
a mini-lecture on runaway slaves by Dr. Freddie Parker, Professor of History at North Carolina Central University; a brief talk about black churches by Thomas Watson,
FSF’s other co-founder; and observations on growing up in segregated Orange County by keynote speaker, Walter Faribault Jr.
