Beg for work, spend too long on said work, rinse, repeat. I wish I had a cool project in progress to share, but thats pretty much my life at the moment.

Might be a good time for another group meet-up. Beer, food and other peoples' awful client stories might relieve some of my recent stress.

Howdy,

Last night I hosted the RubyMotion meetup down here in Sydney and drank lots of beers. Fun stuff.

I sadly don't have many fun side projects at the moment either. I have the time and the ability I just need a decent idea :/

How goes Tyler? Anything majority awesome/sweet/new happen in the last year or so?

Fun stuff Garrett and not such fun stuff Jeff ;) I know the feeling tho. Been freelancing it up lately myself, and while the extra money is nice the extra hours are tiring and the constantly shifting project definitions (my own darn fault for not doing the proper planning) are super frustrating.

I'm not sure if there's much cool stuff going on in Tyler Garrett. We've gotten a few new restaurants and things like that, but nothing super exciting. There's talk of a maker space going in downtown but I haven't heard anything about it in a long while so I fear it may have stalled out.

This email reminded me that this is still my contact picture for Garrett (attached) (if Google Groups supports attachments?).

I don’t have much going on work-wise. Still mostly on the Essilor gig, but it’s slowing down and I’m trying to decide how to segue into a reliable creative profession and/or directly into independent wealth. It seems right now everyone I know is going through a tumultuous career shift or some other life dance, so I’m trying to fit in.

Non-work-wise, we adopted our erstwhile foster son Ashton two weeks ago, and he is awesome. E learned to ride a bike. I threw in the towel on mowing my own lawn and hired a company. I cried three times during Short Term 12 and saw Jaws for the first time. I think that’s the important stuff.

Garrett, Stanley’s has gotten even better since you left. Tyler’s first microbrew, True Vine, opened for business and they’ve got two brews (a pale ale and a coffee porter) on tap at Stanley’s and a few other places. We still don’t have a great coffee shop, although Cafe Bhovana Java opened next to Brady’s and is fine, and Juls apparently has a good one attached to restaurant. No perfect one yet though.

As Jeff said, let’s try to plan a time soon. I heartily suggest Stanley’s, preferably on a non-music night so we can actually hear each other think.

Hey all,

I'm glad Justin revived the old mailing list! My life, in a listicle:

* Since January I've been spending every other month living in Oakland with Tasneem. May is my CA month. I'll be back in TX on the 31st. I've been spending a lot of time learning how to live in the Bay, which has been fun.

* As you can imagine this means I'm traveling a lot. Between the constant motion and the two homes most of my physical hobbies have taken a dive. Instead I'm spending more time reading (Journey Through Genius and The Death and Life of Great American Cities, at the moment) and working on open source (journalism, anyone? http://github.com/onyxfish/journalism/).

* Work has also been crazy. We've lost a couple folks in the past few months and NPR just had another round of layoffs. My job isn't threatened, but morale is pretty low and I'm back to full-time dev work until we can hire. On the positive side we just launched a database of commencement speeches that has done amazingly well (http://apps.npr.org/commencement/).

* As some of you probably saw I wrote a post sunsetting the Hack Tyler blog a couple months ago. (http://hacktyler.com/post/79329571732/an-end-to-hack-tyler)

* Tasneem and I have begun rewatching Star Trek: TNG from the very beginning. This is important.

* T will be in town with me the week of the 1st. Anyone want to pick a night that week to meet at Stanley's? I will drink some of that coffee porter thank you very much.

Cheers!
Chris

We are indeed overdue for a meet up, I’m fine with any weeknight the week Chris mentioned, and I second (third?) the suggestion of going to Stanley’s. Let’s make it happen.

Interestingly, one of my back-burner projects for a while has been a “when are we all available?” web app. It would be really useful right about now, but it’s not built so it’s completely useless. Still, for funsies you can see the prototype interface if you want. There are four views (organizer/guest, registered/unregistered; one goal would be to allow complete functionality without actual registration, just through auth links in email).
A fun project would be for one of you to finish that out for me but give me full credit.

Anyway, if we’re shooting for the first week of June and a non-music night, then perhaps Monday the 2nd?

Btw, both Logan and Tasneem will be with me. If anybody wants to
invite their significant others and/or bring their kids, that's cool
with me.

I likely can’t come until 7 or 7:30, but you guys can absolutely get started earlier. And I’ll be alone, Ash hits the hay around 6:30.
