Nairobi, Kenya, June 20, 2013  - Have you got a great story idea on agriculture and food security and need some funding to produce it?

Are you concerned about land reform and ownership issues? Perhaps you’ve been thinking about agricultural markets and food prices. Maybe you have an interest in nutrition and how it affects Africans. You might also have some ideas on irrigation and new tools for improved farming. It could be that your focus is on biotechnology or livestock and fisheries issues. It’s possible that you have all these brilliant ideas that you want to investigate further and produce a compelling piece for the newspaper, radio, TV or Online and all you’re missing is the financial or technical support to make it happen. If this is you then you need to speak to us. We have a million dollars to fund great story ideas on food, farming and agriculture.

The African Story Challenge is a new competition that offers journalists grants to support investigative, multimedia and well-researched stories that aim to improve health and prosperity across the continent.

Journalists chosen for the grants will come together for intensive sessions to improve their project ideas. Grantees who produce the best stories published or broadcast in media that reach African audiences will win cash prizes or a major international reporting trip.

The competition is open to any African journalist including freelancers working in any media - radio, TV, print, photography and digital platforms. You can apply as an individual or as a group working together on a story. We also welcome applications from newsrooms or media organisations, including small or community media pursuing investigative stories or series of stories on agriculture. The story can be produced and published or broadcast in any African or official language including English, French, Arabic or Portuguese, but your proposal needs to be submitted in English or French.

The deadline for submitting story ideas on agriculture and food security has now been extended to 30th June 2013.

The Story Challenge is a project of the African Media Initiative (AMI), the continent’s largest association of media owners and operators. AMI content development director and Knight International Journalism Fellow Joseph Warungu is leading the project. The Knight Fellowships are administered by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).

"This new challenge will encourage journalists to experiment with new content ideas and find new ways to engage audiences through mobile technology, social media and other digital tools, “ says Warungu, a former BBC Africa Editor. “The awards will make a major difference in the number and quality of stories produced on health and development issues in Africa."

An international panel of editors and media experts will judge the entries. Contest details are available at africanstorychallenge.com and on the websites of AMI, ICFJ and the International Journalists’ Network (IJNet).

The African Story Challenge is supported by an $800,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The programme also has support from the African Development Bank and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (Agra).
