Welcome, local Hacks/Hackers.

Glad to see so many of you join the list. As the original announcement mentioned, this mailing list is intended to plan and promote future H/H meetups and to generally discuss news and technology at play in Chicago and beyond. I’m looking forward to the conversation.

Why not kick it off with a book discussion? A few members have brought up the Data Journalism Handbook that published last weekend — available for reading online at http://datajournalismhandbook.org/1.0/en/index.html — and I’d like to get your impressions.

Journalists, developers, did you dive into the book yet? What insights does it offer? Professors and students, does this make the recommended reading list?

My initial take: The handbook addresses some of the “hows” of data journalism in high-level overview, but the more important question it answers is “why?” i.e., What’s the upside of using data in reporting? That’s the value of the book -- when you read up on the best practices and case studies from news orgs around the world, you come away with great ideas and talking points to pitch data journalism projects in your newsroom.

Have you leafed through it yet? Please share your thoughts.

Matt
