The Parks Department gave me a call yesterday - they were interested in doing something with tree identification, especially Ash Trees. (They think interest is going to really pick up with the arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer) The city's got good data on the street trees, less good with trees in the park.

Were there some people interested in doing something in this space? If so, could you chime in?

Yes, I'm interested. Would love to get the tree database into City of Madison | Open Data.

Are they thinking of crowdsourcing identification of trees in parks or private property? That would be cool.

Erik,

I'm hungry for more info. Could you elaborate? Do you have any updates since November? I don't have much time to contribute, but I've got experience with GeoServer and OpenLayers, so if you give me a shapefile (or similar geospatial data file), or a conveniently-formatted database, it won't take long for me to get you an interactive web map up and running. You might want to get in touch with the Urban Tree Alliance -- I know Emerald Ash Borer is an important issue to them, and Patricia Lindquist is a particularly knowledgeable, awesome person to work with.
