for the record, i want to describe tonight's A/V setup, which was made necessary by the lack of a mini-displayport to HDMI cable.

the movie file was bought from apple itunes music store – a 6.5GB DRM'ed m4v.

i copied it to my ipad, and played the visual part of the video from the ipad via an "apple digital av adapter"
over HDMI to the projector.

but the ipad wanted to output audio over the HDMI link to the projector, and did not send audio out the analog minijack to the sound system.

so i had to play the movie twice, simultaneously, on my laptop as well, so we could get audio out to the sound system.

halfway through the movie, the analog audio connection from my laptop became flakey, so we switched to optical TOSLINK.

i did try a mini-displayport to VGA route, but the movie was HD so HDCP kicked in and refused to play it on the projector.

all of this would have been unnecessary if we had had a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter … or an opensource OS and a non-DRM content source.

those adapters go for something like $50 at the apple store in SG, but $5 online.

so i'm going to buy like 20 for a hackerspace fundraiser, priced at $27 each, profits go toward paying the rent.

who's interested?

unbelievable! very funny sychronicity :)
i was just thinking (or dreaming) the same yesterday,
that we should get like 5-10 of these converter cables there.

my moshi mini-display to hdmi was flaky,
so i bought a replica for 130 hkd 3 days ago and tested 2 days ago.
then this picture of hackerspace in my mind
with a handful of converter cables just appeard yesterday.
i was just about the sleep or woke up recently i cant recall exactly.

and why is it funny? because i was just watching keith barry videos
last nite and saw this experiment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=v87GgxvI4ls#t=405s
than i was thinking what could have triggered this thought in my mind…
but the subject line couldnt and i havent seen it until today probably anyway…

I had the exact same problem a few months ago and was cussing and swearing at Apple and all this insane DRM and HDCP bullshit.
I have mini display to VGA and mini display to DVI but mini display to HDMI is missing in my collection of stupid adapters.

I would buy one :)

Cheers,
Martin
