Hi all!

Anyone know of any TechShop style places in Singapore?
http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2011/07/05/7-successful-products-to-emerge-from-san-franciscos-techshop/
http://techshop.ws/index.html

From my understanding, HackerspaceSG doesn't have a wide range of
tools etc available for members use at the moment - is this right?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Matt

TechShop here, coming soon. I'M IN.
I know how to wield bloody big cutters and saws. I want more.

Where do you want the TechShop to be located at ?

NTU might offer space. Hugh, do you know more?

A few months back some people came to visit who wanted to open a hardware oriented hackerspace but they had apparently not done much research as they had not heard of TechShop. I don't know if they're on this list.

And if y'all paid up your membership fees (and signed up if you
haven't), we could easily start one downstairs!

Some folk from Ngee Ann Poly visited hackerspace on Monday who would be interested in exploring some kind of HSG extension on their campus

that' funny.
I was gathering views from h-space members
whether
they'd approve a membership drive, specifically Ngee Ann Poly
bring bus loads of young men & women, experience day trial membership
Appoint Long-standing members to Vet and Approve applications.

also I'd if my membership months can be flexible.
2011. Pay for 6 months membership upfront + deposit.
Select months out of incoming twelve which I'll be using space.
Since i'll be away for some lengths of time.

properly and automatically regulated. I think this present a very attractive and fair membership system.
Attractive means more members, more stable cashflow, no dead loss for any person.
You can own a membership. You can chose to set status in Suspense. You will be glad for the savings because there is managed down-time.

Yeah, I was thinking of University workshops as possibilities. Though,
at my uni in Australia at least, it was generally only possible for
non-students if you had a mate involved in the workshop, and you left
beer on your way out :)

Would be great to have some more formalised way to use uni facilities
for those of us without contacts..

Just in case anybody is interested, i got my hands on arc welding machine and grinder. Am still teaching myself how to use them properly. Anybody wants to fiddle, we can do a learning project.

A techshop-style place would be nice. A bit of work to make sure that
the users know what they're doing though, like not leaving chuck keys
in chucks. But I suppose if they're interested enough to be there
half the work is done.

Sounds like fun. :) Can't think of anything that needs welding,
though I think I remember my shop class from uni.

What kind of grinder? Bench grinder, angle grinder, or a belt sander
thing?

It works out to roughly $5000/month in rent + utils alone to take over
downstairs and turn it into a techshop.

Another $10k or so for equipment, assuming various people will loan some
of their stuff, and possibly some equipment sponsorship.

This roughly works out to 30 people at $200 each, so I would suggest a
flat structure of $196/month for access to techshop + hackerspace
upstairs, and hackerspace members already paying $256 or more have
automatic access downstairs.

We can get the rest through courses or facility rental to model
clubs/interest groups.

If 30 people will pledge $196/month for min 6 months each, we're good to
go. If this sounds kind of OK to you, respond on list and I will call a
meeting to discuss further. If you're only interested to pay $50/month
or less, or expect $30/day... well, it's possible eventually but it
probably won't get off the ground that way.

Note that we need an ADDITIONAL $5k/month on top of current hackerspace
membership dues, so if it's just current $128 members willing to top up
$64 to make $196, then we'll need 60+ pledges to get that extra $5k.

PS. No doubt you'll have questions on why $196,$5k,membership,etc but I
really don't want to go into this on-list especially if nobody really
intends to join at around $200/month, so indicate if you are and we can
all meet up to work it out... or feel free to make an alternative
proposal involving the same or other location.

Alvin.

I am interested in equipping myself with more hands on skills for tinkering.
Learning to weld stuff is on my list of to dos, yes I am interested in doing a learning project :)
Shall we hook up?

Assuming that there was the equipment I wanted, I would be willing to
to join at $192/mth. I've been wanting to join HackerspaceSG for some
time anyway, but the price is a little too steep for me at the moment.

Would you have any problems setting up what is basically a machine
shop in that building though? I've seen on-list there's been some
problems with noise with neighbours already..

In the meantime, I'll try to keep an ear out for other options, in
case you can't get enough people together :)

well, since it's new and has to be equipped, that can be arranged...
unless you're looking for something obscure :)

yeah, noise may be a problem, but it won't be for the gallery (which
complains the most).

alright, another 29 to go.

i have seen a website where local manufacturing businesses basically
formed a network of machines that they would allow a group to use at
certain times of the week. kind of a decentralized tool shop. maybe
anyone know which site that was. It was somewhere in the states or
europe and i think it was mentioned on the hackerspace or makerbot
blog (probably on make and hackaday as well). Of course you would need
people who get the idea of it and see a benefit in something that
doesn't seem to have one for them. i don't know if that would work in
Singapore though.
a bit like a work jelly or coworking with heavy tools.

I assume there are some people here who know how to weld? It's not something easy to figure out on your own, and safety is an issue.

As for the location... arc welding generates a lot of fumes, and can be a fire hazard as well. Besides the noise from the grinding, there's a lot of hammering too (to knock away stuff that's stuck to the metal after you weld). Basically it's gonna sound like the place is constantly under renovation, and I wouldn't appreciate it if I were a neighbour ;)

Does it help that the tailor downstairs is a bit hard of hearing, and the restaurant on the other side isn't usually open in the daytime?

Don't know that location, but if you want to do welding work indoors you need high ceilings. Also might want to do MIG welding. Less fumes cause the metal doesn't oxidate.

Is there also a need to apply for a "change of use" permit from URA? My understanding is that a machine workshop is considered industrial zoning.

there is already a building zoned for light industrial, at block 71 ayer rajah crescent. if enough people get together to make rental worthwhile we can consider opening Hackerspace West!

Just call it an artist studio, thats explicitly allowed. In many ways it satisfies the spirit of the guideline by URA

Hi Alvin,

I'd probably be interested in a "hardware hackerspace" as well, so
potentially you've got 28 to go! Is the whole "take over the
downstairs" plan something that might actually happen?

What kind of a place did you have in mind? Mill and lathe?

Yes, we could do it if we had the money. There are also alternative
locations such as Block 71 in Buona Vista. Cost is about the same.

Yup, hobby tech shop with mill/lathe, routers, drills, sander, electric
saws and hand tools for plastic, wood and soft metal work rather than
arc welding, serious blacksmithing or car repair. If we ever get a laser
cutter that's where it'd go too. Kind of like a workshop somewhere
between those in secondary school and poly, not so much like a
specialised aerospace engineering lab at NTU or ITE. Not that those
activities are discouraged - we just wouldn't fit it out and find the
right industrial space/insurance to build a specialised shop unless the
overwhelming majority was interested in that.

Sounds exactly what I'd be interested in.

Re: scope of equipment. I can certainly understand not supporting
something like building a Super Seven (kit car). Though something
like a mikrokopter should be doable with modest equipment. :) (And
would be oh so cool!)
