I have a very nice wooden laboratory instrument box that I was going to use but its all getting a little too big and more work than I first thought.
Any suggestions on what might make a good can case? I was hoping to get a kind of steam-punk, post-apocalyptic 50's-nuclear scifi look with lots of twinklly leds.

I'm also looking for something to box a project, in my case (no pun
intended) a humble stupidly over-designed LM3886 based audio
amplifier. One option I'm looking at (apart from better learning the
art of carpentry and building something from scratch) is to look for
vintage wooden wine boxes on eBay. They're stupidly expensive ($20 or
so) as they are supposedly "collector's items", but nonetheless
serviceable boxes made of quite nice looking raw, unstained softwood
(one, two or six wine bottles in size).

That would look awesome embedded in a old world radio case. With a
lights or a screen ostensibly replacing the speaker.
