I'm getting a few PCB's made at the moment by Mitch (Hackvana), so if anyone is in the need of anything (and has artwork ready, or can get it done by the end of the weekend) then let me know and we can probably slip it in the same DHL shipment.

How much does a relatively simple one take to get done?  What format is best?

Are we talking to make the artwork? or to manufacture the board.

The manufacturing side takes 5 working days to complete (or you can pay a premium for 48 hour or 24 hour turn around).

You will need to provide Gerber files for production - this will include a layer for copper (top and/or bottom), solder mask(s), silk screen(s), outside route and drill.

If you do not have the artwork already then KiCAD is what I have used to produce mine. f its a very simple board I may be able to do it for you - there are also a few others in the group that are no doubt far quicker and better than me at it as I have only been using it for about a week.

This is the one that I want to do.  It needs a couple of changes, but is too small to see properly.  Just asked the author for a bigger version.  So maybe next time.

PS. I meant how much does it cost?

Hello Tamsyn,

That board is single sided so it can be made at home if you only want a couple.

Pix is experimenting with a Roland Modela for routing out pcb traces direct design to copper process.
This design would lend its self to that process I think.

Regards Peter

Price works out to about 4c per cm^2 - for example 10 off 5cm x 5cm boards cost about $10 inc HK post to Aus. They get cheaper in larger volume.

Hi Scott - I've been playing around with Kicad at home, to try and make something up.  But failed, so will have to bring it along to Hackerspace some time and have a go there:

This pic helped, and I found a full size version of the pcb layout too:

so once I work out the software it will be all golden.  Thanks anyway :).

Hey Peter,

I've been trying to mill it but it is a really small PCB and the solder mask is a png which is not really high resolution enough to derive a toolpath from. But that larger diagram that tamsyn posted might be a better place to start.

At the moment I'm making a little script to generate RML drill the holes. I'm having some trouble with the Modela stopping half way through the job (which is just full of lots of PU, PD commands).
