Ebor has a bunch of these monitors "surplus to requirements":
  http://www.twtp.com.tw/Productshow.asp?id=231&mnid=110

7" of LCD goodness running of 12V, 2*AV, VGA and DVI input, Touchscreen via USB.

The 'just work' (incl. touchscreen) on Ubuntu 12.10.

$1 each ONO.

The catch(es)?

 - Not all have a complete wiring loom. The unit has a DVI socket with some of the pins reused to provide AV*2, USB and VGA.
 - Not all have working touchscreen
 - If you get the touchscreen working on a RasPi you have to let me know how you did it.
 - Not all have a mounting bracket.

According to that spec, they weigh 500 lbs.
Anyone got a forklift?

Are we all supposed to know who Ebor is?

Ken.

Hi All,

Ebor Computing is my employer
    http://www.ebor.com/

The monitors are ex-SmartMove (one of Ebor's products):
    http://www.smartmovetaxis.com/

The LCD's are on fee-bay, or you can email me.

Thomas

P.S. The spec re: weight appears to be a little on the pessimistic side.

OTOH maybe that's why they're getting rid of them :-)

Hi Thomas,

not sure how many you got going, but I would be interested in a couple
for the R_Pi's I have here.

And will be more than happy to share the finding to getting the
touchscreen working under R_Pi, in theory it should not be to hard.

So far I've got:
dale - 2
tim - 5
peter - 10
tamsyn - 10

I think that's all of them, waiting on a few other interested parties.

If there are any more I'll try to grab them and bring them to hackerspace, I'm sure they'll find a good home.

That might explain the greenish-backlit LCD (even with power off!)

Dunno why you asked, Thomas.
Should have just grabbed the lot, assembled compete units and offered them at hackerspace at a premium ($10?), and the rest at $1 or $2.

Presumably they have a pretty high failure rate?

I'm getting jacked off at the failure rate I'm seeing on electronics, not just cheap stuff.

* New Panasonic 2 door fridge freezes food in the fridge from new.  Finally, a tech comes out and adds insulation to the rear.  Seems better.  (What, Panasonic would skimp on insulation you ask?  Apparently, yes.)
* IpCam from Kogan DOA.  (They do not respond at all to webform submissions or emails.)
* Two LiPo batteries (original and extra larger one) for Puxing radio now fail to charge, after little use.  The 12v supply pack (replaces battery for use in vehicle) fails on transmit, from new.
* Sena Bluetooth interface I bought for use with the radio upsets comms to the Bluetooth helmet headsets.  I haven't tried, but Sena don't appear to be a company responsive to customer complaints.
* Both power plugs with the 10port USB hubs from MSY are total crap.  (Hubs seem to work OK in passive mode.)
* 2 out of 2 VGA cables from MSY failed to work with neighbour's TV.  Old one from my 'junk' drawer was fine.
* Cat5 cable (grey sheath) from MSY failed to work with USB extenders (for birdnest webcam), same length in blue sheath from differerent shop works fine.
* One of the 2.5" disc drive boxes from MSI was DOA.
* The UPS I bought from MSY has cacked itself.  Doubt it is the batteries, cos it just failed totally one day.

That's all I can think of for the monment.
Sorry I hijacked this thread, but I feel better now.  :)

Ken.

To continue the hijacking...

My pet hate is electronic tap timers that either strip their little gears, leak water into the electronics, or eat batteries.  I've had all three happen.

I have two timers - one is about 2 years old, it waters daily, and runs for about 6 months on 2 AAA's. Perfect!

The second one (same model) stripped its gears with the first year, its replacement (different manufacturer) leaked and destroyed itself within 6 months, and the latest replacement eats a 9V battery every month.  Plenty of incentive to replace them with solenoid valves and a central controller, but no time to do so...

They're taking up room and the boss wants them gone.
A smarter me in a parallel universe asked for $1 each + $9 donation to $GEEK_CHARITY, personal use only.

Presumably they have a pretty high failure rate?

AFAIK the LCD's all work, though not all the touchscreens (as advertised).

I hear 'ya!

Upgraded my toy 'copter to a brand-name one.
Someone skimped on the charging circuit so I killed the battery (left it on charge for too long, my bad).
Got a replacement, and a LiPo charger, but now the damn thing won't power up.
So much for "with hardware you get what you pay for".
I guess it's "you get (at most) what you pay for".

Big problem with cheap rechargable battery powered gadgets... a trickle charger instead of a smart charger.
You see it it in battery drills.
A gadget you don't expect it, is battery vacuum cleaners, which are normally charging when not in use
I had a few, and I reckon it was the charger which killed the batteries prematurely, both lead-acid and NiMH.
Gave up and bought an expensive Dyson battery vacuum with LiPo battery.  Great.

I wouldn't expect the problem with a brand name helicopter.  I have a few, and they all cut out once the LiPo battery is charged, even the cheapies

When my NRF24's (2.4GHz comms modules) get here, I'll start experimenting with minimalist setups.
I have bought a house which has 8 solenoid valves already down, though not all used.
But it did occur to me that with a cheap comms seup back to a server....

You could have one of those geared tap units with a comms module in it (they run on 3v) waking up every half hour or so to ask the server if there is any command for it, and the server can turn it off, or on for a settable time.  With a probe in the ground, it could also transmit the moisture level.  (I might do the moisture level bit.)

Do the good gears vs bad gears equate to brand or money?

Ken.

Good gears vs bad gears was same model and manufacturer, just got lucky one one I think.

The replacement uses a solenoid, must be some sort of charging circuit that throws a huge pulse at it (and makes a big CLUNK sound when it does). When the battery is more than a month old, the timer still runs but it can't get enough joules to throw the solenoid.

Minimalist watering setup sounds good - I could put level sensors on the water tanks too then :)

Sounds good.

I'll try to get a park as close as I can and then maybe send up smoke signals or something to attract attention.

With any luck I can squeeze the sack-truck into back of the car.

I didn't put a per-customer limit on originally so I don't feel comfortable enforcing one now.
I suspect we can work out something amicably to make sure no-one misses out
(and if not we can set up that camera Ken was talking about).

Hey everyone,

While we have a shiny new space, we don't that much spare storage. If you can't make it tonight, please try to pick up your stuff within the next week.

Also, no guarantees for anything left at the space, but labeling things should at least prevent unintentional theft.

Thanks,

"possibly" good ones == "LCD tested and working, touch screen tested and
not working (but the touch-screen test was potentially dodgy, so maybe
that works after all)"

There are no power cables or looms left.
The power-socket is fairly standard and there are plenty of DVI cables
which can be modified to make looms (BYO USB-A, VGA and AV plugs as needed).

There really are a ridiculous number of DVI extension cables. Whatever ones don't get taken I'm sure Kylie can knit in to something :)

Hi all

Kylie is hyperventilating here at the thought of lots of cable, we're both having Hackerspace withdrawals. May have to find MHV (canberra hackerspace) on Saturday.

We're in Canberra early doing genealogy research next week is LCA.

Cheers

Robyn

Can someone who scored a complete wiring loom post which pins to use for the composite connectors (there are apparently 2)?  I guess it takes a regular VGA-DVI cable for VGA, since the analogue pins are present on the DVI connector.

Sorry, I can't, but I'll take a picture if that helps?

Clint,

Sorry for the late reply, I had managed to not see your reply until today.

I am in no hurry when it comes to free stuff, so if there are any left and you are going to Riverland at any stage.... Let me know.

btw...  I'll be using the LCDs for an RPi based GPS/multimedia center for my motor bike, with all the design hassles that involves, like vibration, wet, hot, sun, wind, ability to be handled with thick gloves under low visibility at high speed.

cheers

Samps, as a rider myself, I reckon you are biting off a helluva lot.

My bike GPS/multimedia centre is my Android phone.
It works reasonably well, except for display.  Sun on the screen makes it unreadable, so I rely on spoken navigation directions.
You will surely suffer the same problem unless you use a transflective screen?
And will you incorporate phone?

The most difficult part for me is the listening.  I use a Sena headset (SMH10) these days, with Etymotic earphones.
But so far I haven't had a lot of joy with their CB radio interface (SR10).

So I'd be interested in hearing how you expect to listen to your music etc.  (Please don't say helmet speakers.)
And also what control method.  (I have some limited control from the headset.)  I suspect a touch-sensitive screen won't be too useful with winter gloves on.  I've toyed with the idea of a sort of keypad, but where to mount one on a bike?
The vagaries of Bluetooth sometimes make me want to do my own wired-thing for talking & listening, but its hard to beat the convenience of wireless (except for my earbuds).

Regards,
Ken.

If any wiki-gnomes are about, I have made a stub wiki page for information about these displays:

it includes a new pinout diagram that Peter made. There is the ODG file if someone would like to update it (eg, the polarity on the USB data line is missing).

Hello Andrew,

I took the last 5 home last night. If you need any I can bring them in some time.
I'm up North East way not far from Pix.

There are still DVI extension cables there, as well as the magnetic base GPS antennas.

Regards
Peter
