GovHack tickets (free) are now available for participants/lurkers.
I had a lot of fun at the SpaceApps challenge, so I'm in. Does anyone
else want to start a group/got any ideas for fun or challenging uses
of government data? Should we try and get together a Hackerspace team
or just mix with others?

What do you have to know or be able to do to participate?  I've got ideas for apps, mashups, websites etc but I don't code.  Should I sign up as an observer?

Hi Kylie,
I'm not sure how they define an observer, but if you have ideas then
that sounds like you'll be a participant!

I'm keen - and I reckon I could actually be of some use in this one :)

You should just sign up Kylie. I had no real coding skills of use for the SpaceApps Challenge but I still had fun. Plus I can tell you from personal experience that despite not writing any code Simon (& Pix) will happily put you down as a group member...the altruistic little munchkins :D

There's a Port80 meet tonight with a speaker from GovHack attending.
Might be useful if you're not totally sure whether or not to do it:

Any idea how long it will go for?

I've only been to one meeting, but it was 30 mins of chat/drinks, then
1 hour presentation (including questions as it goes).

Hi all,

I thought it might be a good idea if everybody that has signed up for GovHack (or is intending to) got together to look over the data sets at Wednesdays hack session. Based on my experience at the SpaceApps Challenge, just choosing what to work on was one of the most time consuming parts. So getting a head start on that would give us more time to code. At the very least we could throw around some initial ideas to think about before Friday. It would also be good to get an idea of what size team (or teams if we have lots of people) we have and what skills we have so we can tailor our ideas appropriately.

What do you think?

Note that the Tech Meet talks are happening from 7, but I think that will fit in nicely given that Kim is giving a talk on the GovHack data. Can you give us some more details on what you'll be talking about, Kim?

cunning plan.

the move to open data, formats of data available and a quick run down of tools I'm familiar with.(no doubt there are a whole lot more)
also encouraging folks to social media for feedback, etc.

cheers,

really need outcomes!

the whole "here is the data, make what you want of it" is kinda frustrating.

someone needs to write a few "white papers" on what is needed/wanted

thats now how geeks work. its a creative process =P

if they had the ideas already they would hire designers, programmers and project managers which take all the fun out of it =P

So, have any of the released datasets grabbed peoples interest? Discussing it here might create some interest, and form a team.

One mix up of datasets that grabbed me was taking peoples every day routes, like a bus route or bike commute and laying up any of the meta data we can grab along that route.

There is a stack of vintage photography, with limited metadata, but could be near enough to apply to postcode or shapefiles from data.sa.gov.au.

also there are a bunch of interesting statistics data, but thats harder to get the useful data out.

pix, what was that site that showed how far you could get from your current location in a given time?

Kim

The photos from Trove could be added to Kim's idea.

Tim Sherratt, one of the mentors, used the Trove data to create this Beverage Wars graph

The API technical guide is here http://trove.nla.gov.au/general/api-technical

Is anyone else interested in doing something with cultural heritage data?

Depends what you have in mind. I wouldn't mind tinkering with crime data either.
