Friends of ours have an old jukebox.

It used to work until it got a bit of a bump.

I've had a look at it, but feel well out of my depth. I mentioned
hackerspace and its pool of many and varied talents.

Long story short, they have offered to host next Wednesday's hackerspace
meeting (up to 6) to give you a chance to have look at it.
Their house is not far from Marion Westfield and conveniently near a
bus route (contact me off-list for the address).

Plan A is for someone to give it the magic touch and get it working again.

Plan B is to tuck a little computer and amplifier inside it somewhere
and hook it up to the switches and speakers.

Plan C is $INSERT_PLAN_C

Hello,

I may have a source for some spare parts up Tee Tree Plaza way, I will check.
I also have a friend who once worked for a juke box company, I will find out if he can help out.

Regards Peter.

Is there a schematic for it?

Thanks!

Do you need a make/model?

I didn't think to note those down as I never thought someone might actually be able to get parts.

There's a label from Chicago and a 240V-120C step-down to run the innards (i.e. it's a US 120V model, not surprisingly).
(there's another label about a price hike to 20c/song, dated 1977 :-)

I don't think there's a schematic. I suspect the problem is mechanical rather than electrical(*).

Thomas

(*) to be honest that's probably wishful thinking 'cos a mechanical fault would be S.E.P. :-)

The more the merrier.

By the looks of it we need all the merriment we can get at this stage, only 2 volunteers to look at a jukebox while drinking free beer...

all my experience with jukeboxes is with 12", 45rpm  vinyl ones.

what is the actual fault?

the CD mechanism is similar if you squint in a dark room....

The records look more like singles, 66 rpm?

The record head spins but the carriage doesn't seem to move to the correct slot, nor does the load arm grab the record.
I don't know if this is normal (i.e. does the spingle always spin? seems unlikely) or if there's some other fault.

I thought maybe that the same motor did spinning and traversing, and that there was a problem with the gear-change mechanism.
The next step was to start taking things apart, but I wanted a second opinion before doing that (hence the invite).

They're fairly keen to get this thing restored and willing to throw some dollars at it.

Robyn and Tamsyn turned up for a very productive evening of nostalgic hacking (the unit used ferrite core memory to store multi-play selections, how cool is that!!)

Using their black-belt google-fu they found manuals, trouble-shooting guides and all manner of useful web-pages (some looking as antique as the jukebox).

We now have enough information to restore this one (and probably build another one from scratch :-)
Not enough time or budget though, so the restoration plan at the moment is to fake it in 3 stages:

1) WiFi-enabled RasPi connected to iPad docking station hidden in the box with a simple and ugly web-interface to upload MP3s and play them
2) Interface circuit to the selection switches so you can select songs the old fashioned way
3) Remove the docking station and add an amplifier to drive the built-in speakers

RasPi's should be arriving today, and I've got the web-jukebox ready so planning on a trial run this weekend.

Are any of the parts visible, like can you see the records load then spin?

The whole mechanism is visible, accessible and well beyond my expertise.

The cradle seems to run off a single motor which it uses to traverse and spin the records as needed.

It seems the solenoid-actuated gearbox is stuck in "spin disk" position so the cradle never moves into the right spot to pick up a record.

Update:

So I designed and wired up a fancy interface circuit for the 26 selection switches:
... only to discover that each bank of selection switches had a common pole and none of that fancy matrix stuff was going to work.

I toyed with the idea of strobing each bank of switches, messed around a bit, and finally decided to go simple/stoopid/brute-force:
The attached video shows selecting a song which the Arduino Mega reports to the laptop which plays it.

The RasPi was unavailable but it runs identical code which has been tested.

There was a frustrating detour; a hostage negotiation with iTunes to get it to release some songs.
The hostages are now freed and, though potentially traumatized, otherwise unhurt.

I just finished the installation and asked if this would be OK.

It's a monster, gonna need a trailer and a few hefty volunteers to move.
