Being someone who had build a HEX computer as a teenager, Built modems in my twenties, had a BBS,  then a website in my thirties, built a community wireless network in my forties and now? 

Just about every product you can think of started in someone's garage, business only ever take up further development after the demand is realised.  Try starting a business without demand

Though this prediction "maybe" correct in some ways, it is the enthusiasm and demand of the DIY and open-souce community that has driven business to develop more complex, flexible an cheaper accessible equipment, which will change the world like many other technologies have.

I'd probably agree, but then again plenty of homes have hotdog cookers and cupcake stands which I never would have expected.
