Greetings,

I have had a offer from Brian Haddy for a booth at the Adelaide Show.

- Monday-Saturday of Show week (first three days of Show are takes by
on of the Uni's)
- Open during the day, not open at night
- 6x4 booth
- similar to Science Alive.
- in the 'technology pavilion', next to a Telstra Display (so the
Morse Keys might be a good complimentary display)

Usual show perks..
- Free entry to volunteers on the booth.
- Need to confirm parking arrangements.

Possible display
- 3d Printers
- morse keys (with assistance from Elizabeth Amateur Radio Club)
- whiteboard robot?
- air cannon?
- robots?
- satellite tracking?

It would be nice to have 3 (minimum or 2) people on the booth during this time.

- Who would be interested?
- What could you bring?

Regards,
Paul

Hello Paul,

I am happy to supply any of the items I had at the Science Alive.
There may need to be some consideration for the security of the items
with larger numbers of people present.

I don't think I would be able to attend though (possibly only the
Saturday, I need to check on other commitments).

Regards Peter

This sounds like a good opportunity. The biggest question is if we can get booth coverage by our volunteer members.

Calling all time-rich (f)unemployed members!

Hopefully we will have enough people to cover for my ride-breaks ;)

Also, am I right in assuming it will be pretty quiet from Monday-Thursday? Friday and Saturday will be the killers.

If anyone lives under a rock like me, the dates are Monday 10th -> Saturday 15th of September (I think).

As it turns out, it's a Hackerspace off-week.

I'm not able to help during the week, but I should be available on the
Saturday.

I could actually finish the floppy orchestra by that time and drop it
in via Pix or someone else going on the monday, as a demo.

Also, I may be available during the week at odd times to fetch stuff
down to the volunteers (parts, projects, hacks, etc) as I'm working at
Thebarton, 10 minutes away.

Cheers

That'd be cool, I really wanna see that project Heidi!

I should be around and would happily join in - not sure what I'd show myself but happy to be a demonstrator on anything that can be explained to me first!

Maybe I can do some MiniMakerFaire spruiking too.

Mostly I think we just need warm bodies and talking heads, no need to have a special project to show.

I can probably fill in most of the times.

Can't remember who it was on this list who was disappointed there was no MPEG-2 hardware decoding support for the Raspberry Pi - so it was no good for playing back digital TV recordings. Well license keys are now being sold via the raspberry pi store and it works out to around $3. Just thought I'd mention it! http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1839

Thats great news and I'll be ordering my license today - but how long until xbmc supports it?  My dream media centre uses raspbmc as well as CEC support so that I can drive the TV and pi from one remote control, the pi is one of the few devices that seems to support CEC as well :)

There's already a lot of enthusiastic talk on the raspbmc forum about this, and the developer has previously expressed a desire to get MPEG-2 playback working regardless of an "official" method, so I don't think it'll be long.

I'm currently using raspbmc RC4 in a daily basis in the lounge room, and CEC works out of the box! It has just been getting faster & smoother with each release too.

Well, colour me impressed :) Despite their claims of "up to 72 hours" I received the licence key within seconds of paying for it, I added the required lines to configuration and it all just works.  CEC now works nicely with my Panasonic TV too, I can now drive it all from one remote.  I think the old xbox is about to be retired :)

I can offer a full day on Tuesday the 11th or Thursday the 13th, or alternatively two half days on those days,  Happy to rearrange things to fit in when you most need someone during the week, but need prior warning.  Weekends and after 5pm is very difficult.

So, from what people have said we can allocate at least one person for each day.

It would be cool if people could commit to this, and then if people are able to come on additional days, that will be a bonus:

Monday 10th - Damien
Tuesday 11th - Tamsyn
Wednesday 12th - Pix
Thursday 13th - Robert
Friday 14th - Heidi
Saturday 15th - Tim

I'll try to float around most of the days as well.

Greeting.. an update..

If anyone gets this and is able to get down to the showgrounds at 1pm,
I will be collecting our passes for the week, and getting a tour.

It looks like Vehicle access will be restricted for Monday (until we
can get a vehicle pass) so it will be a matter of walking in
everything that we need. (The pass is not impossible to get, but they
are being quite restrictive.)

I will bring the passes along to Hackerspace on Saturday. If you
haven't put you name down on the list and you still intend to go
please do so.

I want to bring some stuff I'm working on obviously, and I was wondering if anyone would be good enough to give me a crash course in (very basic) soldering?

I'm planning to swing past Jaycar on the way to grab a couple of things I need, which happens to include a soldering iron, so if anyone has any recommendations on a good budget option that would be great.

Also if anyone needs anything from there I'm happy to take requests :)

Cool Sam, we look forward to meeting you. Feel free to grab me for a soldering lesson.

At JayCar you can use the Format / Hackerspace trade account to get a discount too (just say you are from Format / Hackerspace on 13 Peel St).

I wouldn't get too fancy with your first soldering iron purchase, a cheap 25w iron will do fine. I'd recommend getting a nice stand with goldilocks style cleaning wool. I find the wet-sponge method cools the tip too much. Also a "helping hand" stand will save your sanity.

When you want to get a really serious (eg, temperature controlled, replaceable tips) iron, you won't get it from JayCar, you will probably get it online (or from Jorn *grin*).

Hi Robert,

I can get your ticket to you, and hopefully grab the tableclothes.  Are you at work today?  I live in Plympton, close is better since I'll be public transporting it.

If you need a pass, and didn't get one on Saturday, you need to arrange a time to get one.

I've added my phone number to the Google Doc, I will try to be at the show most days and if I'm not there, I should be able to get you in contact with someone that is there, as our spare passes will be kept at our booth at the show.

There will be a certain about of pass juggling happening. The later you leave it to get your pass, the more clumsy and stressful this juggling will become.

With the exception of Monday, please arrange to get your pass BEFORE the day you are due to be there, otherwise I (or someone) will have to meet you there in the morning (and scowling will likely be involved).

If you can't make it there on your rostered day, please let me know WELL IN ADVANCE.

If you planning to turn up on any day to help out the rostered person, things are a little more flexible. Call me and we will try to get you in (but planning ahead to get a pass will always help).

I should be passing through the city after the booth shuts (5:30ish?) on most nights. This would be a good time to arrange to meet me to get a pass.

If you don't have access to the Google doc, email me directly and I'll send you my number.

If you have any questions at all email me or call me.

Actually, the closest entrance to us would be the train station entrance on the west. We are in the "Technology Centre" at B6 on this map.

Just an update on booth times.  Since the pavilion is open 9-5 we need to be there a bit longer, say 8.40 - 5.20ish.  Hope that doesn't cause too many hassles.  :)

Actually it's worse than that. Turns out the venue is open to the public until 8pm.

We only have to be there till 5pm, but for security, we've been staying till 8pm.

Paul and I will take turns relieving people in the evenings from about 5:30. If anyone else is available for evenings, let me know.

There is the option to pack things up a bit and hide away stealables after 5pm if we can't get anyone to stay until 8pm.

Also for security, if the rostered person can be onsite from close to  8am, that would be great. If you can't, let me know, and we can arrange to have someone (probably the awesome Paul) there until 9am.

A lot of you folks are going to a lot of trouble over this.
When the show is finished, I'd be interested to hear from you as to whether you thought it was worth it, and what it accomplished.
What sort of numbers you got, what ages, what interest levels. That sort of stuff.

Ken.

I have to check with my "significant other" tonight and see what I can arrange for Thursday outside of the 9 to 5 slot,  I'm thinking I might be able to get away with 8 am to 6pm (maybe) not sure about 8pm though, but I shall let you know latter tonight.

Here's some photos from yesterday:

We had a steady stream of people interested in what we were doing - the K9 was a great attraction!  Plenty of cards got taken, and we had interest from school students to retirees.  It's giving us plenty of exposure, so even if 1% are interested that's fairly significant.

While I was buying my (life changing) folding chair on the way to the show today, the lady at the checkout said "Heading to the show? I saw your booth yesterday, K9 is fantastic!".

So now we are Reject-Shop-Retail-Attendant famous. From strength to strength! :)

Hi everyone,

If anyone was thinking of popping in for a short while, today would be a good choice. I think I'll mostly be on my own, and a visitor would make food and toilet breaks a lot easier :)

Call me when you at the western gate and I'll come let you in.

Two things.

1) We are running low on passes, so call ahead before dropping in if you are expecting free entry - we may not have it to give.

2) Rob suggested accepting donations. How about we sell duplicates of printed objects for exhorbitant prices when people ask? I'm thinking $5-$10. Make it clear it's basically a donation to the non-profit entity that is Hackerspace. Thoughts?

was planning on running a few errands in city then heading over lunchtime-ish if I'd be useful? if you already have enough people & I'd be in the way let me know & I can otherwise occupy myself in or outside the grounds.

happy to pay entry to showgrounds if passes are an issue.

think it's a great idea to sell stuff!

grand work pix & all x

Hey there,

Who is thinking of coming in today? Sorry if you have told me, but my brain is mush by now. Please call me and let me know, especially if you already have a pass. Today should be fscking insane from what I hear (and is the reason I have been stingey with passes), so help will be appreciated. People with a particular penchant for pandering to punters primarily preferred ;)

Anyone feel like a pork roast after knocking off?  Had a brain fail today and turns out my friend doesn't like pork rather than loves it, so lunch's pork shoulder will be cooked tonight anyway.  I live @ Plympton.  Maybe 10 minutes from the grounds.  Red wine and beer available, byo girl drinks.  Let me know if anyone's keen to celebrate a successful show.
