OK, call me anti-social, but what is being promoted there comes close to SPAM.

I tolerate Facebook with a much reduced presence from before because it is mostly noise.
(Have you guys read how it has been replacing email addresses in address-books with Facebook addresses, on a synch? -It get worse and worse.)
My G+ circles mostly contain technical types.

Twitter seems to me mostly for people who have nothing better to do than hang off other people's words.

Digg... well maybe.

I reckon this hackerspace occasionally comes up with real gems.  Which is why I am a 'member', and why I read each post as it comes in.
As an engineering type, the arty-farty stuff doesn't appeal, but the crossover from electronics to art is still interesting to me.

However... blindly linking stuff all over the social network is exactly why I withdrew from Facebook (as well as where it is going ... advertising > privacy).
I subscribe to the things I want to see.
Anything else can be just noise, which detracts from the goodies.
Yes, sometimes a random hit can be serendipity.  Usually not.

So please consider how much your potential audience will want to see the type of thing you are promoting, before you hit those 'share' buttons.

The other method is to ditch one's Facebook account, create a new alias one, and not tell anyone about the new profile.  :)

It's easy enough to just 'unsubscribe' from someone's posts if they are too 'noisy' (Good turn of phrase Simon).  Or a group's posts, come to that.  I'm pro having sharing options so I can post the awesome stuff on my timeline.  It's not like we have updates on the hour or anything - a max of 2 times a fortnight my friends who aren't into cool geek stuff can deal with it - chances are if I have any of them left they've already unsubscribed from me anyway.

I'm a fully-fledged social media floozy... and proud of it, Ken!

I do have private accounts in various platforms & I make good use of the filters/lists that Simon recommends. But I am very public these days, yes. You'd probably hate following my twitter & fb feeds... my shares are also often artyfarty!

Right now I'm especially noisy, for the crowdfunding campaign, but I love being fully part of the internet world!

Happy to chat on/offlist about ways to wrangle platforms for better peace of mind, if you ever need to. I might not practice quiet, but I know how to achieve it.

facebook is abandonware these days and twitter is only useful if your
client can filter out posts with keyword searches to keep the signal
to noise ratio sensible. g+ is a whole lot better, content wise, but
its quietened down in the last couple of months.

TBH, the vast majority of my reading is from RSS feeds from blogs these days.
1hr20 offline[1] commutes need to be filled with a decent read.

hehe, then i'd say you're following the wrong people! i get a lot of noise but i also have an enormous amount of signal. often from the same people (so you have to be careful with those filters...).

but then it's horses for courses, right? you choose what suits you. that's how it all works. I speak/share differently in different spaces, because they have different timescales/audiences.

Ken, how does ADDING them effect you. Don't like it don't click them... IMO links to hackerspace on Facebook can only improve Facebook content compared to the usual trash, as well as promote our group.

Adding link buttons is fine.
What I'd hate to see, is where I'm forced to have a Facebook, or G+, (or MySpace or...) account to get the full benefit/communication from Adelaide Hackerspace.
I don't dispute that hackerspace links showing up on Facebook can only improve Facebook's content.

(Today is my day for hammering Hackerspace, cos my new house has crap Optus coverage, and I don't have ADSL on there yet. So until I get ADSL, I can't activate an Optus micro-cell thingie to give me good mobile coverage in my house.  -And I thought I could ride out the ADSL gap by using my mobile tethered. Ha.)

I definitely don't want that either Ken. Feel free to point it out if you think that is starting to happen, but I don't think that is the case at the moment. Obviously you will miss out on posts on the facebook page, but I barely pay attention to them myself so they can't be too critical. Rob has even given up making facebook event postings, (though I wouldn't mind if someone picked that task up again). It's just horses for courses. Some people like facebook, Twitter, etc. so we maintain a presence there to increase our catchment.

Noooooooooo.
We shouldn't have to go to Facebook etc AT ALL to see hackerspace stuff.
Correct me if you think I'm wrong, but on a smartphone, apps like Facebook are insidious, in that they have access to all your accounts.  So maintaining separate usernames, logins, etc to retain some privacy, just doesn't work.
Safer to use the browser.

(I'll let Google know who I really am, but not Facebook.)

Fee's suggestion was that we could convert the existing  (completely non-critical by the way) facebook group into a facebook page. This has the added benefit that you can see the contents without being logged in to facebook.

Alternatively, we could have the contents of the facebook group exported out to our blog, again so that you can see the content without having to have a facebook account.

So this was a post all about how we could remove any need for anyone to have a facebook to view even this tiniest sliver of hackerspace related activity, and yet you reply with "Noooooooo +rant".

We understand your views on facebook (even if we are possibly baffled by your double standard regarding Google), but if you just have a knee jerk rant every time someone mentions the word, no one will ever pay any attention to what you are saying.

I assumed that meant having a Facebook page which can be seen on the Facebook website without logging in to Facebook.

Sorry,did I think wrong?  She meant the hackerspace site should be publicly visible without having to log in?

Fee means converting the current Hackerspace Adelaide "facebook group" in to a "facebook page". On facebook, for reasons which escape me, "groups" and "pages" have arbitrarily different sets of features. Such as "pages" being viewable without being logged in to facebook.

I might add, the facebook group only exists because someone else made it long before we started actually meeting as a group, and i took it over from them.

oh dear, I've compounded things..

I didn't mean instead, I meant aswell.

facebook only gets access to your address book if you choose to sync your mobile contacts to your fb contacts (as does linked in, etc). it can be a useful feature but it's not mandatory.
