Crashing a mainframe

I'm writing a cyberpunk novel for nanowrimo. In the novel a hacker
named Ice infiltrates a military lab's computer. He steals some files
and then crashes the mainframe. How would one go about crashing a
mainframe. Could he do it so that it could not be resurected? Would
files be lost? If he couldn't do it so that it couldn't be fixed how
long would it take to fix it? The novel has to be done by November 30th
at midnight. Please help.
