Some of you might remember me proposing a while back we set up a hacker space at UW and have folks from different disciplines mingle, work and make things together. Here is a story on one such fascinating place.

Now that I am just up the road from hackerdojo, I am beginning to understand the allure of Silicon Valley. The energy is just something else here.

Hopefully a hacker space will develop on UW campus.

Hello All --

Just wanted to make you aware of Sector 67 hacker space here in Madison.

http://www.sector67.org/

It is not a UW-only space (nor is it free to students :-( ), but they have tons of neat stuff.

Full memberships are 100/month, 50/month for college students. This membership gives you access to the space, tools, and equipment you've been trained to use. We offer a la carte classes for more sophisticated equipment like welders, mills, lathes, 3D printers; and requiring a shop safety/orientation class to keep the insurance companies happy and you safe. Most classes are (roughly) flat rate 20/hour.

Sector 67 sounds very nice.

My pitch was for a campus-resource where space would be offered as a competitive, year (or two) long "fellowship." Applicants would be judged on their sales-pitch, and allocation would be controlled to ensure a diversity and proximity of disciplines so, say, a computer programmer is sitting next to a music major, and so on.
