I heard Kintaro barking at the front of the house the other day.  Only our backyard is fenced.   I went out the back and saw that the side gate was open.   The plumber was back there earlier, running my new gasline to the kiln, and I forgot to check the gate that he left open when I let Kintaro out.      I looked pasted the gate, and Kintaro was on the sidewalk, barking at a neighbor about halfway down the block.  Our street is pretty busy, but he was on the sidewalk.   I hollard, "Kin-chan, get your treat!" and he came running back.    With both my Akitas, I have always given them a treat (usually terriyaki beef jerky) on recall.   It helps them come.  Kintaro got his treat in the house.   I think I gave him a hotdog.

Below, a link to a photo of Kintaro I took with the new camera I got for our Japan trip next month:

Beautiful picture Lee.  I so miss my akitas.

Your heart must have stopped when you saw him outside ... having an emergency recall that always gets a treat no matter what can be a lifesaver.   I've been known to call "dinner!" in a crisis.

Helen.
