Hey All,

I want to have a discussion about the shirt colors we wear on Sundays. It seems to me that the vast majority would prefer if we could play dark vs. white to make it easier to determine who is on your team. I understand this has never been the tradition, but we aren't playing traditional games.

Typically, there isn't a stall count so you have as much time as necessary to collect yourself, figure out who's on your team, and find the open player. We are currently playing a 5 stall count (and let's be honest - some of us count pretty quickly). This isn't enough time to have a smooth game considering the fact that we waste precious time just figuring out who's on your team due to the color mixing. Let's make it easier on ourselves and everyone bring a dark and a white. We can still do teams with the circle/name thing, then people switch shirts as necessary.

Sound good? What are some other thoughts?

Hey Jeremy,

The tradition of doing a circle helps us learn each others' names so I am all for continuing it no matter what shirts we bring.

Rules like No stalls, no sideline, no back of end zone etc., along with no dark/white is indicative of the sunday game being more relaxed than weeknights, and (debatable) hopefully this helps bring in people who have never played ultimate before.

When playing to stall 5 (now 4.5),  I agree 100% that dark vs white would help. I know many of us already carry two shirts,  we might as well make it white and dark.

If anybody has strong feelings about not doing that, we [Jeremy that's you and I :)] need to be understanding, let them do what they prefer. They are not making anyone unsafe, so in the spirit of the Sunday game we should let them play the way they want. A shirt foul once in a while is ok in my opinion.

Cheers,
Aneet

Recent Sundays:

- good numbers: 17 today, 14+ a week ago
- grass fine except one area where people spun out on cuts
- Charles tried to knock Jack over with the throw, but he fooled him
by sitting down first. No word on how his stomach took the impact of the disc.
- Elena, with the defensive knockdowns
- Sam almost back to 100%
- "I should have caught that."
- 2 throws into the wilderness
- 1 great blue heron with a mocking laugh as it flew over the field
- diverse wind, 10% of the time quiet, 90% boisterous
- play duration set new records, both days going well past 1:30
- fine weather and fun play were responsible

Hey all, I'm not playing right now, waiting for a more substantial change on the COVID front (vaccine probably).

But I'm really looking forward to playing with you again eventually, so I just wanted to cheer for trying lights/darks, since I've struggled in the past to keep straight who's on my team.

Hope to see you all again soon-ish.

Recent weeks:

- slightly low turnout ~11, ~12
- great grass, mostly well-fertilized
- claimed Worst Huck Ever (judges' determination based on the quality
of the huck and the technical skill of the hucker)
- attempt to better the Worst Huck Ever, (judges ruled a good
attempt, not good enough)
- Josh with going-away full-frontal (judges impressed, especially by
the small bounce, but without a catch what can you do?)
- disk passed under a foot for a score
- Brian (not Brian)
- 5 beat 6, what's the point in having a man advantage?
- inoffensive wind
- nearly lost a player trying to retrieve the disk far in the Deep Woods
- long, fun games
- player had to leave to call his grandmother

Games were going well 12-13 in snow & sunshine, then...

- three deer
- photographic competition
- HAC Red-Tailed Hawk, waiting for real winter before leaving
- dragonflies in November
- graupel?
- Brian showed a second time, in the halcyon days
- game to 1:45, not a record but a long good game
- 12, 13, 4?
- Aneet, Charles, Logan, emb. rep.
- not enough for ultimate, enough for box
- 60+ mph wind on Sunday
- wind died down, temperature rose, blue sky & sun, normal playing
conditions by 11:45
- the high winds did strange and unexpected tricks with the disk, but
you had to be there at 11 to see them, the winds died quickly
- 12:45 people headed home
- three deer

Good games for the last weeks.

- 12+ every week
- an anfractuosity, the route a receiver often takes.
- continued attemptsto beat the Worst Huck Ever.  The judges yawn.
- Charles and the flashy dive
- Sam the Destroyer Defender
- winds moderate
- field . . . it would be better if the temperature went low enough to freeze it solid
-  black-capped chickadees
- improved defense leads to many short throws
- Logan is out for the year.  It could be Injured Reserve; it could be that he plans on spending Christmas at the North Pole while the boss is busy elsewhere.  Who he is meeting there remains unknown, but the letters in his car were written in a feminine hand.  He denies everything.
- depending on interest, a Christmas Day game could happen
- when one team has a man advantage, it evens things up for two of their players to stick together
- the meaning of the word "all" has changed over the centuries

A smooth rollover from 2020.

- third week in a row with five people
- Conor yes, Logan no
- Logan yes, Conor no
- Conor no, Logan no, Viman yes, Ken yes
- average age keeps climbing: Charles, Viman, Tom, Ken, reporter
- double box is better than single box
- almost everybody went down at one point or another, but Viman was
the only one to show maximum effort with a full-frontal
- as with previous weeks play went to around 1, everybody pooped
- so close to the magic number 6

After three weeks of 5, we made it to 7 last Sunday.

- tomahawks are hard in normal games, worse in 3 on 3
- Vimal thumps
- mystical German engineering units
- the HAC Bald Eagle heading steadily northward
- cold at 11 warmed up nicely
- game to 7 with Magical Mystery Points
- "not a day over 27"
- Ken almost set an impossible standard, after achieving a benedict,
he came within an ace of pulling off an ultimate play. But it was
not to be. The judges did stand up and applaud his performance.

The coroner reports that at least twelve people died last Sunday on the field at Fuller Park. With no surviving witnesses the coroner proposes the following the following events.

The HAC Ultimate game takes place at the large field next to the river from 11-1 on Sundays. Last Sunday it also took place between two large flocks of geese. Around 12:20 large flocks of geese were seen flying in V’s over Ann Arbor. Passing cyclists report that geese landed on the field in such numbers that they concealed what was happening. The participants in the game must have called for help but the cyclists and runners all admit to listening to music or talking remotely with friends.

Evidence indicates that at least in some instances the geese pulled the old “hit ‘em high while your friend cuts them off at the knees” maneuver. Once they had a person down the geese were limited in what they could do and only attacked the throat and genitals. This would not have stopped the elite athletes. A smaller person crippled at least two of the geese with edge blows from the hand. That body was dismembered. Another individual, identified at T made it to his car and a shotgun lay near his body. The Police Chief expressed concern that the car and it accessories belonged in a James Bond movie.

At least four of the bodies bore marks on the head and face from talons of a size that could only have belonged to an eagle. A couple of white tail feathers lay near a well-gnawed body. It must have taken quite a jump as the jumper sought to bring down the bird. A third type of creature became involved, either coyotes or Egyptian jackals. The latter idea is passionately defend by a group U of M biologists. Skeptics call them delusional. There has never been a live Egyption jackal in Ann Arbor area unless the French brought one.

The coyotes (or jackals) swept the field, killing and stripping the flesh from the bones. At some point they turned on the wounded geese and those who could flew away. The incident was only reported when a couple with three young children came out of the woods and discovered it.

The corpses decayed very quickly and scientist do not understand how extreme cold did not slow the process. Services were held on Wednesday. The police are investigating reports that all the graves were opened very early Thursday morning and the contents, what little remained, were removed.

From the desk of the Editor: The Gazette regrets distressing its Gentle Readers. Like all good publications we maintain obituaries for newsworthy individuals. The above is not one from our files and we are tracking down how it got in the system. The presence of Egyptian jackals and memories of old rituals associated with the HAC game may cause needless speculation.

From time to time every publication receives information it keeps to itself and does not pass on. I received such from my predecessor and will pass the same with my contributions to my successor. The following individuals died last Sunday:

Aneet
Charles
Jeremy
John
Ken
Logan
Marcus
Matt
Sam
Tom

a couple who shall remain nameless
a small white dog, probably the one who launched 43 geese into the air recently

Due to the information previously mentioned, all those mentioned above are able to attend this Sunday’s game if they choose. The Gazette does not deal in zombies. The Gazette will discover who has been disturbing its files. If this column distresses a Gentle Reader, just pretend it never happened.

Hi Daniel,

I can explain, Jon likes to speak in code sometimes lol.
A Benedict, named after one of our former players who moved away, is the act of throwing your hat at the disc to deflect it.  Definitely illegal, but definitely fun on occasion in our pickup games.
The Ace Jon referred to was a play I almost pulled off, known as a "Greatest".  It's when the disc is going out of bounds, but you jump with your feet still inbounds and throw the disc back into play before you land out of bounds.  Very rare play to pull off.

Hope this helps!

- 4 on 4
- less muddy than slick; it was easy going down
- parallelogram versus rhomboid field layout
- almost "A Ken!" moment, but he did not complete the action and score.  He will likely try again, having come so close.
- pick called
- many unforced errors, those wild optimistic throws
- Tom had the best no-look 'D'
- two maybe three errant throws Logan* could have caught, one made with such wild exuberance that it exceeded even Logan's abilities
- Charles shifted into high gear going for a long throw into the endzone, grinding was heard when he made the shift, a lubrication problem from lack of use most likely
- the judges rose out of their seats as Ken went down in a controlled slide and caught the disk, but when he stayed down and did not let the slide bring him back to his feet, they sat down and resumed discussing how much each got for selling their vaccine appointment

- hawk
- owl fledglings

This Sunday:
- 3 on 4 until a late arrival, Josh, Charles, Ben, Brent, Tom, Sam,
Ben, reporter
- closing game of 7 & one of 3, Sam the only one to achieve +2
- wind good for America's Cup before easing - a little
- low numbers assumed due to people staying in warm beds, though the
field was ok and your reporter did not notice rain of any sort. Slug-A-Beds.

Game on the 9th

- notable for Ryan's attempt to set a new record for touches while trying to control a disk.  He juggled it six times, then nonchalantly knocked it up in the air with his left elbow before juggling it another five.  For anyone to beat his record for 2022, it will take at least 12 touches.  The judges have always held that only the first to a record holds it.

Good snow last Sunday, three more inches would have made it great.

- steady southerly wind
- Tom, Matt, Rob, Heather, Ryan, Ken, Marcus, Anit, John
- two swans escorted by a flight of white doves
- white doves join a rowdy bunch of pigeons and together they gracefully cavort
- the game went on
- a fine throw was made to Anit, tricking him so that he fell
- but the thrower had the disk deflect off a defends hands
- it would have landed in Anit's lap, instead he caught it a score
- a right button on the ground across the line counts as a score
- an ambulance hawk passed overhead carrying an injured white to the hospital
- an idle ambulance hawk chased, trying to steal the delivery
- the first dodged and cut away
- sadly the dove never made it to the hospital

Jeremy!

Great to hear from you!  Where are you tossing the disc nowadays?

Yes, HAC, and Night Ultimate are still here and going strong.  Please stop by and join us if you're ever near the "27.68 square miles surrounded by Reality" otherwise known as Ann Arbor. ;-)

Two Sundays ago, 17 people.
Last Sunday, about a dozen.
The difference?

Early on, two Johns waiting in the parking lot began talking. An
individual at the entrance to Fuller Park spoke as a prophet of
old. What he was saying was not clear.

- lots of regulars did not show
- various mostly new people did
- the judges looked for the Ryan clone, but it did not appear
- neither did Ryan
- the clone showed up at the start of this year and whoever made it
did not know much about Ryan, the clone has been diving all year
- maybe the clones of all those players who did not show will show
instead tomorrow

Not all you, I should have mentioned it after I had thrown the frisbee.

For future consideration, what guidelines do you expect a defender guarding a thrower to adhere to?

Apparently the only way a thrower can have confidence in moving the disk from side to side involves flipping the disk vertical to get it through the space.  I don't understand why they would require that.  I will learn how to do it, but it will take a little while.

Hey John —

Any chance you can bring my Phnom Penh Hat disc to the Fuller field game this am? I think I should be able to make it down there, though not to play just yet.

Hi Josh,

Just got your email.  Your disc is in my car, so the next time we meet I will have it.  It will be good to see you again.

 Game on the 9th

- 8 showed
- notable for Ryan's attempt to set a new record for touches while trying to control a disk.  He juggled it six times, then nonchalantly knocked it up in the air with his left elbow before juggling it another five.  For anyone to beat his record for 2022, it will take at least 12 touches.  The judges have always held that only the first to a record holds it.
- could have used more snow

Game on the 16
- 7 showed
- a fine game of three on three was ruined when a seventh player showed.
- could have used more snow

Game on the 23rd
- 10 showed
- Matt demonstrated the not-often-seen Double-Jointed Elbow Catch
- could have used more snow

Your embedded reporter, catching up
