"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."
Colossians 3:17
just sharing something.
we had a Bible study last week touching on the verse above.
it got me thinking since then what does "the name of the Lord" mean? i'm haunted for days thinking about it!
(O,o) whahaha
are we as Christians similar to the 911 radical terrorist telling the world what they did is for God? (my mind's still fresh from 911 anniversary).
i refuse to accept it!?! would you?
anyways, good to know that...
the "name" is not literally NAME... but God's character!
in the olden times, people call on the name of the king, name of caesar, name of someone great...
like "declare something in the name of...!"
thus, name refers to what stands out from that individual, their strong characteristics like leadership, strength, mercy, love...
so very assuring to know as Christians we are different from extremists declaring what we do is for the Lord.
whatever we do in word or deed... we do follow Jesus awesome character!
(note: some of my google search... one from
http://bible.org/article/names-god mentions "
God’s name declares much about His person, but it is God’s Word that reveals God and His name" and also in support is BSF lesson today... "name=character"!)
so, what do you think of the "name of the Lord.." mean?
btw, a question also arise who are the Scythians. During the Roman Empire, they're nomadic Iranian people who conquered a huge area in
Pontic-Caspian steppe (looking at ancient maps, if my understanding of geography is right somewhere in Eastern Europe covering Ukraine and some parts of Russia and Turkey). I'd analogize them to nomadic Genghis Khan and his Mongolian horse riders conquering ancient China.
erica;)
