Anyway, since many people couldn't make it last week, I'll highlight some of the important ideas.
From Colossians 3:15 - 17;
1). The idea of thankfulness is repeated in all three verses. And basically, when you are actually thankful for something, you would most likely treasure it and honour it. This would also apply to the salvation we have through Christ.
2). In verse 15, the word "peace" in the Greek is the word commonly used to mean 'no conflict' or 'absence of war'. The 'peace of Christ' therefore refers to us no longer being enemies with God because of Christ. So, we are called to be united or in harmony regarding salvation.
3). In verse 16, the word 'dwell' in the Greek literally means "in the house". This gives the sense of permanence. We even have this idea in slang where we say "<name> is in the house!" which means the person is very important or is a central part. We are to then to hold the word of God in high importance when doing the things listed in verse 16.
4). In verse 17, the word name can be translated as "character". In ancient cultures, names would carry much more meaning and significance than today. Often children were named according to how the parents wanted the child to turn out or along the lines with the rest of the family. For example, in Roman culture, Lucius meant "of light" and Crassus meant "fat mam". In Greece, Throphilus (to whom Luke writes in the book of the same name) means "lover of God". As a d example, a name tends to remind people of the behaviour, attitudes and achievements of a person rather than the person himself. For example, if I say Barack Obama, you would most likely think "first black president". In this way, when you do something in the name of God, you do it according to his character, in the way that glorifies him. Also, you didn't need Greek to work out the name thing since the flow of the passage is pointing to the idea of Christian living, about us being called to live as godly people.
Sorry if that was long-winded. =P also excuse the illustrations. I can't think of good examples.
Enjoy the study!
