Rumor) Shpeshal Nick has heard that either the Original Soul Calibur is being remade or a Soul Calibur Collection is in the works

It could be coming game pass.

This could be what Phil was alluding to when talking about Goldeye type of announcement.

Nick did not specify where he got the information, but he's certain that it's still unclear whether we are getting just the "Soulcalibur" collection or a remastered/remake version of the first "Soulcalibur" game.

In another report by Purexbox, Microsoft confirms that four new titles will be available for Xbox Game Pass next month. These are "Homestead Arcana," " The Last Case of Benedict Fox," "Minecraft Legends," and "Everspace 2."

This information comes from journalist Nick "Shpeshal_Nick" Baker in the latest Xbox Era podcast. Baker notes how his source hasn't really clarified if it's a remaster of the first game in the long-running fighting series or an entire collection of the earlier entries:

"We all love remasters right, everyone loves a good remaster...so that's what I've heard Namco might be looking at... [unclear] whether we're just getting the original SoulCalibur remastered, or if they're doing a remastered collection of games..."

If it was a collection, it would presumably include SoulCalibur II - originally released on the GameCube and multiple other platforms in 2003 (and featuring the GameCube-exclusive fighter Link from Zelda). While only an Xbox release was referenced when discussing this rumour, Bandai Namco tends to port its fighting games to as many platforms as possible nowadays.

Interestingly, this rumour follows Bandai Namco renewing the trademark for SoulCalibur in October last year after the second game was delisted from the Microsoft Store in May 2022. While trademark renewals don't often reveal much, a handful of Bandai Namco remasters have been uncovered this way in recent times.

This includes the Klonoa and Pac-Man remasters, and most recently the GameCube exclusive Baten Kaitos, which had its trademark renewed in May 2021, and is now getting a remaster of the first two games later this year.

Remember though - this is just a rumour, so take everything here with a grain of salt. In saying this, would you be interested in the earlier SoulCalibur games being remastered? How about a new SoulCalibur game on a Nintendo platform in general? Leave your thoughts below.

Man I so hope that we get an actual remastered collection of the SC games. I would at least want Soul Blade/Soul Edge, SC1, and SC2. I really hope they're remastered versions of the console versions because they had so much extra content that they deserve to be the version that should be played automatically. Love me some Weapon Master Mode in 2

This isn't a franchise I've ever really had an interest in, but Namco has been working miracles with all the remasters lately. I heard the Tales of Symphonia remaster wasn't very good, but I don't know if that's true or not. I love what they've been doing with Pac-Man and Katamari, though. I didn't enjoy Klonoa as much as I thought I would (having never played the original), but it's still cool the remaster exists. I've probably made a dozen comments on this site about how much I want to see Pac-Man World 2 make a comeback, so here's hoping.

@locky-mavo Hm... Content-wise, Tales of Vesperia: REMASTERED is a good remastered version of the game. It includes all content from the original JP-only version. And remastered version received fully-voiced dialogues, while both worldwide and JP-only versions have partially voiced dialogues. Also, remastered version features dual audio option support. Strangely, after this good remaster, we got a terrible "remaster" of Symphonia. That's sad...

@Not_Soos I heard the Tales of Symphonia remaster wasn't very good, but I don't know if that's true or not.

Well... Content-wise, it's a bit better than original Nintendo GameCube and PS2 JP-only versions... That's all. From a technical viewpoint - it is the worst version of the game. QoL updates - barebones. From what I've seen in the comments, there's no dual audio option support in the game. That sucks. And dialogues in the game are not fully-voiced! While for the Vesperia remastered version they recorded new lines of dialogues. Vesperia remastered version features fully-voiced dialogues and dual audio option support. Vesperia does what Symphonia don't. Bandai Namco really invested some money into Vesperia remastered version. The same can't be said about Symphonia remastered version, though.

Well... I want a lot of fighting games on Switch as possible! And SoulCalibur games would be a nice addition to the Switch's fighting games library. Same with Tekken. I want traditional fighting games on Switch, not these 3D arena-brawlers, Namco!

@Fighting_Game_Loser I really hope they're remastered versions of the console versions because they had so much extra content that they deserve to be the version that should be played automatically.

CAPCOM and SNK staff with their arcade-(im)perfect ports, collections, ACA NEOGEO ports, NEOGEO collections, counting their easy money, sees your comment: Pfff, hahahahaha! Arcade-(im)perfect ports and collections would be quite enough for you!

Remastered Soul Calibur II the only one that Nintendo is doing?? No thanks. I already still have Soul Cailbur II for my Gamecube. got everything unlocked for it including the Lizard and some other extra dude. Plus I think I still have a couple of the "joke" weapons to unlock but not sure

Aside from Super Smash Bros., Soulcalibur is my favorite fighting game series. My first game in the series was Soulcalibur II on the GameCube; and of course, I'd main Link. Since then, I bought Soulcalibur on iOS (which is sadly no longer available, due to it only being compatible with 32-bit operating systems, and the newer versions of iOS are 64-bit), Soulcalibur IV and V for the Xbox 360, and Soulcalibur VI for the Xbox One. Definitely looking forward to Soulcalibur VII, if and when it comes out. And if this rumor is true, I'm looking forward to that, too!

If SC2 came back to a Nintendo platform again I'd certainly buy it.

Day 1 if it contains Link especially if it also contains Spawn and Heihachi, I'll wait for a sale otherwise.

But buy it I most certainly would.

@XandertheWise That's not a very wise take, Xander. Just because you have the original, and I emulated a full playthrough of it last year, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be made available for more people.

@Serpenterror There was never a Soul Edge 2 & 3, just a Soul Edge version 2 in the arcades which had a couple of minor changes made and Soul Blade was the name of Soul Edge when it released on Playstation 1 in Europe. After Soul Edge was Soul Calibur and it's sequels.

Just remember how Sony ruined Soul Caliber. They were so angry that the Gamecube version sold better than the PS2 version, that they bought out the rights to Soul Caliber 3 (a move that would eventually ruin the sales of Soul Caliber).

@AmplifyMJ

Funny, for some reason I couldn't help but keep thinking about playing Weapons Master on Dreamcast for hours (and missing classes at University as a result...). SoulCalibur WAS the reason to own a Dreamcast at launch. Still looks amazing.

I liked Soul Calibur back in the day, got the latest one on PS4 but they all feel like the same game to me. I read that

SC VI reached 2 million copies sold so there may be hope for a new entrance, maybe in Switch 2?

@TheDragonDAFan Link would be safe for the Switch. Nintendo has a fairly decent chunk of money tied up in Namco Bandai. The other two... guess we'll see. However, I wouldn't suspect Link to be common outside of a possible Switch version.

I'll take a port of II any day. Easily one of the best fighting games out there for people who like unlocking crazy amounts of extra stuff. SCII and Smash Brawl were the kings of collectathon fighters in my house.

I don't think I would be interested in a purchase simply because the only character I would want to use would be Link, and that alone is not worth the cost. This is awesome for Soul Calibur fans if true though, assuming the remaster is up to par. Metroid Prime Remastered honestly has me a little spoiled on how good a remaster should be.

@Not_Soos Must be negativity and/or recency bias, but it's sad that most people only talk about the "bad" ports (don't fully agree with that definition since while Tales of Symphonia for example has certainly issues it also has some extra content and honestly I'm just happy that it's available on current consoles, in particular Switch for me) and forget the great ones like those you mentioned (also want to see Pac-Man World 2 and even 3 make a comeback)!

I'd love SoulCalibur classic games on Switch, I unfortunately missed II on GameCube, but got to play at least IV on Xbox 360 when we still had it at home (we had two, but my older brother first and my older sister later took one each when they moved) and it was pretty fun!

@RadioHedgeFund Yes Soul Edge 2 & 3 are just versions 2 and 3 and are just updated versions of Soul Edge 1, hence why they are not Roman numeral. Think of them as Champion and Turbo Edition of the game, not really sequels like Soul Calibur was. Soul Edge version 3 (which was a Japan exclusive) was the only one that got a home port and for some reason was rename to Soul Blade. Notice how I also said 9 games, Soul Edge version 1, 2 and 3 are all just the same game but with different balance changes, roster, and updates. Some players may like one version over the others too ya know.

Soulcalibur II[9] is a 2002 fighting game developed by Project Soul and published by Namco and the third installment in the Soulcalibur series of weapon-based fighting games. It is the sequel to Soulcalibur, which was released in July 1998. Originally intended to be released on Sega's NAOMI board,[10] the game was released on the Namco System 246 arcade board before being ported to the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox in 2003.
