HabitJudo is a great idea, and I like the game dynamics as described.
But I'm not sure the spreadsheet is working for me.

I've tried using it in Numbers (Apple's spreadsheet in iWork), and in
Excel X for Mac (which is several years old). Each behaves
differently, but I can't tell if either is behaving as expected. Does
anyone here use these products?

Examples of odd behavior:

- In Numbers, the random points are calculated whenever I click any
cell on the spreadsheet. But their calculated value goes... nowhere
that I can see. Should I paste this at the end of the day's row?

- Should the random points be influenced by how many of today's habits
are marked as done? (Do you use a "1"? an "X"? Does it matter?)

I realize this spreadsheet is kind of a sketch that we can extend and
modify. But I'd like to benefit from your experience rather than just
guessing. Maybe a screen-cast of someone using it would be a quick way
to tell the story.

Thanks again!

Jim,

The spreadsheet I use is actually on Numbers: I exported it to excel
to make it more accessible.

1) The values DO go nowhere, you input them by hand. The reasoning
for this is: if you put a reference to the cell, that reference will
update every time you make a change to the cell and the random number
updates. What's needed is a conditional formatting that grabs a value
once, but then doesn't update. I imagine that this is doable, I just
didn't take the time to learn it yet. I invite you to solve this.

What you'll need is the Formulas and Functions User Guide for numbers,
which you can download as a pdf from the Apple website. Alternatively,
I can email you my copy.

2) It doesn't matter how you record it, the only benefit of inputting
(1)s is that it gives you a habit total for each day. It doesn't
affect the point values. it would probably just be easier to record
the point values in the cells, makes inputting 1 step simpler.

3) I'd be happy to do that. Any screencast programs you'd like to
recommend?

A screencast would be really helpful. I've modded my spreadsheet
somewhat, and hope that I didn't break it in the process.

The changes I've made:
1) The beginning of the belts and rewards sidebar is a bit confusing
to me. Why no rewards until after one has reached White/Yellow status?
There was an empty cell before the White/Yellow cell, so I added a
reward in there at a point total of 55.
2) I changed the order of the days of the week so that weeks begin on
Monday.
3) I added more weeks at the bottom of the spreadsheet. I now have
enough weeks in the spreadsheet to get me through three months of
Habit Judo.
4) I added a worksheet to the spreadsheet that contains my own
favorite rewards. I think I'm going to figure out a way to use the row
and column numbers to randomize which reward I get.

I really appreciate the effort you've put into getting this together
and spreading the word about Habit Judo. I'm hoping it works for me.

Now I just have to wait around and hope that you develop an iPhone/
iPad app.
