Lexington Habitat Families Are Proud of Their Home

Lexington Habitat for Humanity partnered with Dr. Stephanie Holcomb-Kreiner of Georgetown College to conduct a Homeowner Outcome Study with all current Lexington Habitat homeowners. 98.4% of families reporting said that they were proud of their home.

The Escobar family is certainly proud of their home. Milton Escobar and his children, Cynthia and Enrique moved into their recycled Habitat home at 631 Ohio Street last summer.

Cynthia's bedroom was painted a bright and cheerful pink -- her favorite color. She is so proud of her pink walls that she refuses to put any photos or decorations on them. "She said she doesn't want any holes to mess up her walls," said Milton of the 6-year-old. "She finally let me put up a mirror. She uses it to brush her hair and put on her makeup when she plays. But she said, 'daddy, that's it, no more holes.'"

Eight-year-old Enrique is just as proud of his red room, where he now displays awards and certificates from school. He loves chasing his sister and playing Hide And Go Seek, a game that was difficult to play in their old one-bedroom apartment. "They are happy to have plenty of room to play," Milton said. "They are proud to help me keep things very neat. They clean up all their toys every night before they go to sleep. We are very happy."

Milton's home was sponsored and built with love by the Pat Smith Habitat for Humanity Endowment Fund in 2012.

volunteer Volunteers Needed

During this season for haunted houses, we urge you to set aside a little time to help our partner families who are enduring pretty scary living conditions until their homes are completed. Moldy walls, leaky plumbing, faulty heating systems and insect infestations are just a few of the problems our families hope to escape when they become homeowners.

Construction
Multiple builds are underway this fall, and help is especially needed in November and December. To join us at one of our builds, please go to lexhabitat.volunteermatrix.com and view our volunteer calendar or contact Volunteer Coordinator Risa Richardson at ri...@lexhabitat.org or (859) 252-2224 x108.

This week, 18 students from Villanova University are staying at the Bluegrass Christian Camp and volunteering with us at various construction sites and at the ReStore. Before they jumped in to help, the students attended mass at the UK Newman Center on Sunday and spent Monday volunteer and participating in teambuilding excercises at Life Adventure Center in Versailles.

Meet Our Families - Simplice & Justine

When most people were fleeing the war-torn regions of Africa, Simplice Aizan was heading into them. As a missionary and a humanitarian worker for the United Nations - and later as a pastor of a small church in West Africa - Simplice is happiest when he is helping and ministering to others.

Soon, he will reap some of the good deeds he has sown.

Simplice and his family will soon become homeowners, thanks to Lexington Habitat for Humanity and generous sponsors from the Consolidated Baptist District Association. Each member of the family is looking forward to moving into their new home.

Simplice, who holds a master's degree in logistics and supply chain management from the French University of Littoral in Africa, is currently studying to earn ministerial credentials from Global University. He is happy that his family will have more financial security and a brighter future. Simplice's wife, Justine, a homemaker, looks forward to watching her children play in their backyard and having room for furniture.

Their 8-year-old daughter looks forward to having her own room to practice gymnastics and play with her Barbies. Their 5-year-old son can't wait to have a room to watch his favorite television shows - Tom & Jerry cartoons, Arthur and Caillou -and jump and play without disturbing his neighbors. Most of all he looks forward to sharing his new home with Curious George, his favorite stuffed toy that he takes with him everywhere - to the grocery store, to the park and to bed. And now he will be able to take his little monkey with him to his new home. "He is very excited," Simplice said. "Every day he says to me, 'when will we have our own home?' I keep telling him 'very soon.'"
