Family Spotlight: Nzerhumana and Bitondo
|

From their first day in Lexington, Nzerhumana and Bitondo loved the city. Regardless of their circumstances, they do not ever want to move elsewhere.Their community consists of a healthy community of refugees from the Congo, their church at Living God Tabernacle, and their family. The importance of their faith is quickly evident, and is a part of what keeps their family close regardless of the challenging circumstances of the last years.
Despite living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and the US all in the span of the last 7 years, their family is incredibly close as well as remarkably talented. Jackson (14) plays the drums in his high school marching band, plus guitar and piano at home and church. Joyce(13) sings in the choir at her middle school and at home. Tresor (10) and Silvia(8) are both in elementary school. Hope (4), Meda (4), and Sharone (1) are the newest additions to the family.
Nzerhumana and Bitondo will build and purchase a home with Lexington Habitat for Humanity this year. They all look forward to the day that they can have more room in a home that is much more spacious than their current apartment. They hope for a day when their children can go to school, and come home to a safe, comfortable home. And they look forward to the first day when the children can join them in thanking God for the volunteers, sponsors, and partners who made it possible.
That day is quickly approaching, thanks to the sponsorship and volunteers from Link-Belt who kicked off their build last week and continue to work this week.

April showers bring new homeowners
|

The rain hasn't been on our side, but our amazing Project Managers and volunteers haven't let it slow them down! Nzerhumana and Bitondo, Mary, and Norma will all be able to purchase their homes from Habitat by the end of June!

In the early hours of April 24 more than 500 Build-A-Home birdhouses will be placed throughout 22 undisclosed locations that will be north and east of Transylvania University. It will become a scavenger hunt of sorts and any birdhouse found may be taken free of charge. We do request one birdhouse limit per person. To follow the excitement visit Community Engagement Through the Arts and Lexington Habitat
The Build-A-Home project kicked off in 2014 when CETA and Lexington Habitat began placing typewriters in local businesses, schools, organizations around town and then asking "Home is..." It was organized by Lexington Habitat for Humanity and Transylvania University's professors Kremena Todorova and Kurt Gohde as part of their Spring Semester course entitled Community Engagement through the Arts. The "Home is..." messages were then incorporated into the project when participants decorated their birdhouse.
