Is Habari dead?

Hello fellow Habarians,

For a year and a half now, ever since I launched my website, I have
been running on Habari. Frankly I didn't really have any major issues
with it, but after using it for so relatively long I started
wondering, is Habari dead?

Honestly it just feels like all development has completely halted on
it and no-one even cares. Habari has been on the current version for
a good year now without even minor changes or improvements, its been
almost 3 month since that 'Almost Habari 0.7' post went up, and still
nothing.

I really love Habari, and I really would love do being a part of this
community, but at the same time, I want to do so much with my site, I
want to upgrade and improve it in so many ways, and it's just not
possible with Habari unless I want to be developing every bit of
functionality myself by hand. No-one's writing plugins for it, no-one
working on any of the core functionality, whenever I enter the IRC
channel, everyone is always dead quiet, despite the fact that people
are there, etc.

So honestly, I was just wondering, does Habari even have a future
anymore? Should I continue hold my breath, or is it just about time
to give up?

No, Habari isn't dead. Things are slow at the moment because a few key
people have been busy with other things. Speaking for myself, I expect
to start working on Habari again in the next month.

0.6.4 was released in February, and we're definitely overdue for a
release. Trunk was merged with the makaanga (release branch) not too
long ago, and there's been some work to whittle away the <a
href="trac.habariproject.org/habari/report/14">tickets for 0.7</a>.
People still care.

I'm confident of a release before the end of October.

Also add to this that it's summer in the northern hemisphere (where most of us are based) with most people stepping away from their computers to be with their family out in the glorious sunshine (when it's out :-) ). Most projects tend to slow down over the summer months.

If you've got the time and skills, we could really do with some help in resolving some of the blockers in the list Michael linked to.  They're the primary thing holding back the next release.

Really the only thing I could help with, is something that doesn't
seem to be needed either way. I am primarily a UI and web designer
and only do some basic front-end development.

We are always in need to testers for new releases, and for people willing to write documentation for us. Also we could use more high quality themes released for Habari.

Any of these sound like something you would be willing/able to do?

I'm able to kinda test the new releases, but given that my site
requires a few custom developed plugins to function properly, I'm not
sure how well that would work out, unless someone is willing to help
me out with porting them to the new releases.

Regarding themes, yes, I am more then willing to be designing unique
and very high quality themes for Habari, however I would most probably
need one of the developers to assist me a bit with the coding. I'm
fully able to do everything with the CSS etc, but I don't do any work
with PHP and so I'm not at all familiar with how I would need to go
about the coding past the html/css.

Given that more or less all themes are almost identical when it comes
to the actual integration of functionality, as long as a dev could
properly explain and walk me though doing that for a theme, I'm sure
I'd be able to go on, on my own from that point.

Awesome. I am sure there are. Number of people who would be willing to collaborate on themes with you, myself included.

Simply send something to -dev when you are ready.

Well that sounds quite jolly. Last time I wanted to do this (about a
year ago) everyone was too busy to help out and were just throwing me
around - that guy may help, that guy saying he's busy, try someone
else' etc etc etc. :p

I'm more than willing to help out if you want to create a couple of
themes. A standard theme for 0.7 would be a nice addition.

Just drop in to habari@freenode and I'll help out in any ways I can.
Just highlight (eighty4) me in there and I'll try to help out. I'm
working 8-17 (UTC+2) but I'm online 24/7.
