Hi Habari people,

I am looking forward to using Habari as it looks fantastic, clear and so on. However, I have simply no idea how to download and install it:...

I downloaded Version 0.9.1.zip and when I tried to install it (I assume you install it like any new software program, like Kindle, security systems,etc... ie, you run it and follow the instructions) all I got was a bunch of ??? ???WinRAR?? and a cheap-looking zip whatever. Totally confused.

I have bought a website name and host is all paid up, so I want to run the site as a blog with Habari, or at least use a Habari blog to direct people to the site (I already had a basic site with Dreamweaver/CS3). I want to put up articles and some other media.

What the hell is with all the ???? signs and how do I install?! Is there a better version, maybe earlier? I may know "zip-all" about zip but it can't be that hard!

I have Windows XP.

Thanks for some advice: I am not super techy (as you can see).

Hello,

with Windows XP you should be able to extract the archive without any external programs. XP handles zip files as folders by default; if that is not the case, you should have some context menu entry saying "Extract all" or so. When unzipped, the files have to be uploaded with an FTP client such as Filezilla. After that, you can open your site in a browser and the installer should come up.

Thanks Konzertheld (great name, concert hero!), but I still don't get the full picture! I have downloaded Habari 0.9 zip file; after that, I don't get it...
I have a Windows XP laptop, ideas (writing, photos etc) to post, a paid up monthly host and a reserved website name, and that's it. Is it possible to quickly list the step by step process? They say it's 5 minutes to set up, but I don't really understand what is meant to happen! If I can start seeing a page with  my posts, then I can get into making it full of photos, videos and other more complicated things later. Thanks!

Find the file you downloaded and right-click on it. You should get an option to "Extract All...". Click that, and it'll open a series of windows that just ask you where to extract it.

After it's extracted, you should have a directory with all the Habari files in it. Then you'll need to get them uploaded to the web host you've paid for. The easiest way to do that is usually FTP, but a lot of shared hosting services also include a web-based file manager that you might find easier for this first time. That'll depend on your host, and I'm sure they've got some instructions for uploading files in their Knowledge Base or Support area - they always do.

After that, you should be able to load the domain you reserved and the Habari installer should appear. There should be instructions on the wiki and in the built-in documentation for that, but feel free to ask questions.

Hello,

What you've downloaded is the source files for Habari. You will now need to upload them to your web host directory. Once the files are there, then you can goto your site address and follow the prompts.
