New issue report by smerrill:
Pingbacks are automatically approved for publication, making them a viable
spam vector.

The pingback plugin should default to leaving incoming pingbacks as
unapproved, to minimize spam. Line 162 of pingback.plugin.php can be
changed from STATUS_APPROVED to STATUS_UNAPPROVED.
