Our complicated SSL cert is up for renewal within 30 days.

To remind you, it's a UCC cert valid for 5 subdomains.

It seems that it might be more economical to buy a new wildcard cert
from a reseller other than GoDaddy (this pleases me, at least) for less
than the cost of renewing the UCC cert.

Back in 2008, I bought a 4-year UCC cert for $319. The same thing would
cost $306 today. The renewal price is somewhere around $90 for a single
year.

A wildcart cert from Namecheap (looking at the Comodo PositiveSSL
Wildcard) would cost slightly less at $89 per year. This would get us
the wildcard on the cert -- Instead of having to choose which domains
can sit behind SSL, they all can.

So, unless anyone has any better ideas or warnings...?

I am all for it, and can help pay for the cert as well. You shouldn't be footing the bill for this alone anymore.

I agree entirely with Chris... I'm prepared to chip in for the bill too.  I'm sure we could have a whip-round on the priv list.

Since some folks seem to be interested in helping to foot the bill for the cert (my wife thanks you!), I've set up a Chip In page that keeps track of your contributions.  The page redirects to PayPal, where you can make a contribution of any amount.  The money comes directly to me, since I'll be buying the cert one way or another, but you can at least see the progress on the contributions via Chip In.  I know we've discussed setting up a non-profit before for tax purposes, but the setup costs are a bit high for me for that at the moment.  Anyway...

If you want to chip in for the SSL fund, here's the link:

If we meet the funding goal before March 16th, I'll set up the cert earlier.

Thanks,
Owen

Well ok then.  We've already met (has it even been an hour?) the funding goal. I didn't really expect it to be done so quickly.  :)

Thanks to Sean Coates, Chris Davis, Mike Lietz, and Skippy for your quick response.

As requested on IRC, I've got a support ticket in to Namecheap asking about Open Source rates (maybe free?) for SSL certs.  If they'll spot us a cert, I can either refund you or put the contribution toward hosting or something.  When I hear back from them, I'll let you know.

Damn you guys are quick and generous.  I'm even up insanely early and I've missed the boat.

I say we keep going till some of the hosting costs Owen has been shouldering are recouped.
