Solstice Art Run Wed 23 June

The pandemic is over and it’s high time we revived the summer solstice ULoop.

 

The summer solstice falls officially on June 20, so I’m declaring—after no consultation with absolutely anyone—Wed June 23 as the Summer Solstice ULoop and Morning Mimosa Run.

 

For anyone who wants to get up early, I’m going to offer a special art-tour of campus that will cover 4 famous works in the campus Landmarks collection that cover Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art. The tour will take about an extra 30 minutes and will end in the Turrell skyspace called the Color Inside, for the dawn light sequence that some of you remember from a few years back.

 

The art-tour will leave BS at 5:30 instead of 6:00, but should get back to BS not long after 7:00 as usual.

 

And of course, everyone should contribute the usual refreshments for after the run—but I’ll let someone else coordinate contributions. I’m the curator, not the caterer.

Okay ULoopers and Solstice worshipers. Second notice!

 

We haven’t observed the Solstice since the winter of 2019. And this one marks the end of the pandemic in North America.

 

So: Wednesday morning 23 June is the Summer 2021 Solstice ULoop Run and Festival. Festivities to commence around 7:15 after we get back from the run. Please indicate on this listserv what you will bring so we don’t end up with 7 gallons of coffee and no mimosas.

 

The normal ULoop group will go off at 6:00 as usual. For anyone who wants to add a short art tour to the run, that group will leave BS at 5:30. I’m going to take you by four works that pretty neatly illustrate the history of Abstract Expressionism to Conceptual Art. The art tour will add an extra 30 minutes and will end in the Turrell skyspace called the Color Inside, for the dawn light sequence that some of you remember from a few years back. I’ll cache water there so we won’t have to stop at Jester dorm. (There will be homework but no quizzes.)
