My thanks to the 6 polar bears who helped me with my post-crash flat and sticky tires. After the 2nd flat and stopping to call the sag wagon, I found that my cell was dead. Fortunately, a good samaritan stopped, and after I failed to get any response from 2 potential "sag wagon drivers" on his cell, he & his wife went back to their house to get a bigger vehicle and gave me and my bike a lift home! Wouldn't take any money for his trouble either. So order is again restored in the universe,as the good sam (I think his name was Gary) more than made up for our pinhead dog owner.

I may be out for next 2 weekends w/ travel & some minor surgery between Christmas & New Years, so perhaps until next year….

Kevin,

Good to hear that you are doing ok.

I did stop at the church on my way home just in case you were still left there, but, obviously you were gone. I was concerned that leaving you alone at the church would not leave you with any options if you could not find a ride. Not too mention having a dead cell phone!

I think that the Surgeon General is considering putting a warning label on my back that states: "riding too close is dangerous to your health".

Look forward to seeing you on a ride soon.

Happy Holidays.

Rick

The two small dogs on Doc Nichols did a kamikaze attack on us. Luckily we
were going uphill and only rolling around 18 or so. Kevin and Rick did
their best to not run over the critters but Kevin ended up laying his bike
down and then I went over his bike and land half on the grass and half on
the pavement. No one was hurt too badly, and Rick had a "spirited"
discussion with the homeowner who insisted that his dogs only did this
because cyclists in the past have thrown things at them. Suffice it to say,
a rational dialog did not take place despite Rick's best efforts. But
Kevin's tire ended up with at least two gashes and could only be repaired
well enough to get us to the church on Carpenter Pond.

Nicely done, Joel. I could not have done a better job of summation. And, your version is certainly much shorter than mine would have been! (Ed would certainly agree...) Being succinct is something that I struggle with whenever I am discussing anything cycling related!

On the "spirited discussion" with the homeowner, I am feeling a bit embarrassed about arguing with someone who was using irrational logic. Me bad. What I should have been doing was helping you, Kevin, and any one else who took a spill. I was just wasting energy with a guy who saw some cyclists down, and did not take one second to apologize, or see if we were ok.

I am wasting more energy on him! Done.

Thanks for the update Joel (I hear everyone talk about your books, I mean
articles - I guess they are really posts, and how much they like them).

If anyone was hurt or has incurred a loss the dog/homeowner is responsible
for the damage since they were his dogs. I am not a lawyer but we have
plenty in the group. Arguing with idiots should not really be encouraged.
The only words that need to be said..."you'll hear from my lawyer"!

Glad Kevin made it back.

are these the pomeranians? I've been out with the guys during the week
and we nearly ran them over. Jon Supler got off his bike and walked up
to the door to let the owners know that there two loved ones were
about to be road kill. Time to get tough on these owners and call the
cops/animal control.

That would be them. The owner did, at first, apologize but was very quick
in defending his dogs when we started telling him to keep his dogs either on
a leash or in the house. Then he started using the excuse that they are
running out after cyclists because we throw things at them. We told him
that we don't carry anything to throw and, if someone did, then it was
because they were probably trying to defend themselves against attack by
these pompoms.

He even started to look for things in his yard that we cyclists presumably
threw at his dogs. Anyway, a complete waste of time trying to reason with
him. He only seen it one way and we were the ones at fault. He was going
to call the sheriff too. Imagine, calling the sheriff on us! Unbelievable!

In the future, keep an eye open for these dogs. The house is not too far
from the top of Doc Nichols and has the large turnaround driveway with some
sort of statue in the middle.

Speaking of dogs, here is another one to look out for. I was told by a
cyclist in the store last week that as he was coming down Norwood, where the
new bridge is, and 2 dogs came out of nowhere and almost took him out. This
is between Six Forks and the Registry development right at the bottom of the
hill. So BE CAREFUL! There are alot of inconsiderate dog owners out there
letting their dogs run loose.

Was the dog incident yesterday reported to the sheriff or animal
control?

With regards to the subject; some of you are aware of past incidents with the dogs at the X-mass tree farm on Cannady Mill Road near the Tar River bridge. The dog/s have biten 2 cyclists in the past and several other close calls. The dog has a record with the local animal control and has one strike left before it gets taken care of... So be on the look out and report any further attacks please.
(For those who have been wondering,...I have been having major knee problems the past few months. I had knee surgery a couple weeks ago and working hard to get back on the road. Looking forward to riding with the Gyro's in 2010!)

Happy Holidays!
