Spoke Cycles is in 100%. This is a huge issue that needs addressing.
Add me into the emails Tony. I'll help in whatever way we can.

I like to see if a "Cyclist safety awareness ride" of some sort can be organized to take place say from Wake Forest to downtown Raleigh on Capital Blvd. with plenty of media coverage. Why do it on Capital Blvd. you ask? Of cause non of us will ever really ride on Capital Blvd. but where else would be a better road to ride to get the attention? This matter should all concern us as cyclists and this could of happened to anyone of us, I'm actually surprise it hasn't yet! Every time we are out on the road, there are always a few close calls because of an impatient driver wanting to pass unsafely. It takes a couple of extra minutes out of their day but may safe one of our lives.
>>
>> I feel like if this can be pulled off, it may bring a strong message that "cyclist lives matters too" and it may educate drivers to be a little more patient because we all share the roads. They might not like us but its the law and they should at least respect us. Will this fix the problem?...probably not but it's a start.
>>
>> So if anyone has any ideas on how I can get this rolling, I would appreciate it or if you feel that this is a total waste of time than tell me cause if something is not done or said....one of us will be next on the news. I'm thinking to start...maybe contact the city of Raleigh for permission...RPD for escort...pick a day where as many of us can do the ride...contact local news stations like WRAL or Cable14 news?? I don't know...please help

Here's my 2
If something like this is going happen is it just going to b local or statewide? I.e. Invite ALL cycle clubs across the state?
Also if we're going to ask for police escort and abide by the rules of the road I don't see that as a critical mass event that is INTENDED to incite "discomfort"
Capital Blvd or downtown Raleigh seem like the best hi-vis routes to attract attention
Again just my 2 cents
Share the road!

I'm not sure that a "Critical Mass" type of cyclist takeover of Capital Boulevard is the best thing to do, and has the potential to create a negative impression in the mind of the non-cycling public rather than a positive one. There is already a misperception that cyclists generally ignore traffic laws and don't care about the rights of motorists. That said, we clearly need to emphasize that cyclists are everywhere, have rights to the road, and deserve the respect and awareness/caution of motorists, but we don't want to add fuel to those who would like to further marginalize us and reduce/restrict/remove our rights.
