Fellow cyclist and friends,

In response to the recent tragedy of 4 cyclists getting hit by an incompetent driver down in Johnston county prompt an idea I like to see happen. I like to see if a "Cyclist safety awareness ride" of some sort can be organized to take place say from Wake Forest to downtown Raleigh on Capital Blvd. with plenty of media coverage. Why do it on Capital Blvd. you ask? Of cause non of us will ever really ride on Capital Blvd. but where else would be a better road to ride to get the attention? This matter should all concern us as cyclists and this could of happened to anyone of us, I'm actually surprise it hasn't yet! Every time we are out on the road, there are always a few close calls because of an impatient driver wanting to pass unsafely. It takes a couple of extra minutes out of their day but may safe one of our lives.

I feel like if this can be pulled off, it may bring a strong message that "cyclist lives matters too" and it may educate drivers to be a little more patient because we all share the roads. They might not like us but its the law and they should at least respect us. Will this fix the problem?...probably not but it's a start.

So if anyone has any ideas on how I can get this rolling, I would appreciate it or if you feel that this is a total waste of time than tell me cause if something is not done or said....one of us will be next on the news. I'm thinking to start...maybe contact the city of Raleigh for permission...RPD for escort...pick a day where as many of us can do the ride...contact local news stations like WRAL or Cable14 news?? I don't know...please help

Stay safe out there.....

Personally I think it is a great idea. I will be willing to help. Not only a bicyclist but a motorcyclist and truth be know I feel safer on my motorcycle and spend most of my time mountain biking because of the risk factor on the road. I am the owner of Upstanding Bicycle Company and 2x2 Cycles and rode often with the Gyros.

Best Regards

Garrett Blake

Absolutely agree. The shop will support the event and help in any way we can and I'm sure I can speak for team when I say we will support this too.
When I feel nervous about doing the only thing that calms me down, something needs to change!

WOW...I'm overwhelmed with the support and interests from those who responded. From local club members and store owners alike I thank you for your support. Just a quick update, I've contacted the city of Raleigh and waiting for a response from a "Susan Wilson" who is the manger/director for THE RALEIGH BICYCLE & PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMISSION (BPAC). This is a start and hopefully a direction we can take to getting this ride rolling. Again...thanks for the support!

Andrew,

You have made a very appropriate action by contacting the BPAC. This advisory body was appointed by the City Council to provide them with "guidance and leadership on all matters concerning bicycle and pedestrian activities" in Raleigh.

And, maybe this is ironic, but, according to what I have read Mike Dayton was injured in the accident, and, I believe that this is the same Mike Dayton who Chairs the BPAC. I have seen his name in the minutes of the meetings that they hold once per month on Mondays.

If this is correct they will be well aware of this incident.

We might take a step back and wait to see what they want to do, and add our support. They are very active and would be our greatest advocacy group. If you read through the minutes from last year on their website you will see how much they have done, and how they have the "ear" of City Council, and the Legislature.

I just wanted to update everyone on what has taken place so far since yesterday. The ball is definitely rolling and set in motion. Since yesterday, I've spoken to Susan Wilson over at BPAC which directed me to contact the City of Raleigh's special events department. She also put me in contact with Evan from "Oaks and Spokes" which has experiences on cycling promotions such as what we're trying to accomplish. As for the special event dept. from City of Ral., I've spoke with Sarah. As far as she knows, a permit will not be necessary for the type of event we're trying to put on but she will confirm this info. ASAP. Currently, working on setting up escort from the RPD. If all goes well, the plan is to start the ride from Wake Forest somewhere (perhaps in a shopping area where there are plenty of parking) and ride down to Fayetteville street on Capital Blvd. Once there, we're planning on having a few food trucks and vendors. Susan Wilson has already mentioned that DPAC will be 100% supportive so I'm thinking they can set up a both/tent with info. on Bicycle and Pedestrian safety. Likewise, local bike shops like Robert from Spoke Cycles can perhaps have some sort of bicycle clinic. The proposed dates of the event are Sunday 3/13, 3/20 or 3/27. I've already checked to see if there were any conflicts as far as other events such as racing but all looks good at this point. Again, if this all works out...please save one of the mentioned dates and help support this event.

I may be jumping the gun here a little but I just wanted to share on what is going on since I've gotten so much positive support on this. Thanks again and stay tune as I will update any new info. that comes along.

Andrew

There will be a backyard criterium  that folks can ride over to and race in.
Just let me know what date you land on.
