FYI to all, Gene's funeral will be at 11AM on Sunday at Brown-Wynne funeral home on East Millbrook. Gene was a cycling enthusiast for many years and was coming home from a nice afternoon ride on the randonneuring bike he got a couple of months ago in preparation for a cross country trip.  He was going along the same stretch of road the most all of us have gone down dozens, if not hundreds, of times when he was killed by an apparently distracted driver.

Gene was 66, just retired, and has a grandchild that just celebrated her first birthday a few days ago.

If you you knew Gene, or even if you didn't but can remember all the close calls, please consider attending his funeral to show support for his family.

Thanks,

Joel

I do not think the driver left, nbc17.com had pictures of a black pickup truck parked on the side of the road with the passenger side lights/bumper knocked off.

Many of us ride that stretch regularly,
There is ample shoulder.
The lack of info/details is a bit unnerving.
Has it been confirmed to be hit and run and no I witnesses or did he simply make a bad move a at a very bad moment? These would be good to know.
We had a drink thrown at us not far from there and a i have had many many many  extreme close calls on Olive Branch, giving the feeling of very  hostile territory.  So it would be good to know this not some act of  such a driver pushing the limit to now  riding people down.

I didn't know Gene, but I have ridden that stretch of 98 countless times. My condolences to you, his family and other friends.

It was Gene Rotberg, a neighbor and friend of mine.  He had just retired.
