Dear Action Working Group,

Svana has asked me to provide you with an update on the Youth Side Events during COP11, so I hope
this information will help you:

We will have two official Youth Side Events: The first is one is on the 16th and on the establishment of GYBN, our network's goals and mission as well as on
youth participation in other UN environmental processes in general and what the CBD could learn from this. We will also use this side
event to present our Position Paper to the public.

Tentative schedule:

1st Block - 30minutes - presentation of GYBN, the network's history, structure mission and goals, the Kick-Off meeting and our statute (we already have a presentation from the Kick-Offᅵ but this need to be modified, shortened and updated for this purpose)

2nd Block - 30 minutes - presentations from Youth Delegates who are active in the CSD, the UNFCCC or other international UN-Processes

3rd Block - 30 minutes - panel discussion about "Youth Participation in the CBD and what the CBD could learn from other UN-processes"

ToDo's:
Identifying speakers for the 2nd block
Identifying speakers for the panel discussion (e.g. members of the GYBN interim steering committee, youth delegates from other processes, representative from the CBD, NGOs
or a government)

The second side event is on the 18th and about Youth Activities to protect Biodiversity all around the world.
For this Side Event I am thinking about giving up to 6 organizations a 10-minute slot each, followed by a 30-minute panel discussion on Best Practice examples,
Lessons Learned and Challenges for youth NGOs working on Biodiversity. So far Go4Biodiv, IFSA, Sustain and NAJU would present during this Side Event.
Theoretically we still have two 10-minute slots available and I am quite confident that other organizations will contact me during the COP or in the next days.

Tentative schedule:
1st Block - 60 minutes - presentations from Go4Biodiv, IFSA, SustainUS and NAJU, 10minutes each (plus probably two other organizations)
2nd Block - 30 minutes - panel discussion

ToDo's:
Decide who is going to moderate the panel discussion
Decide who we are going to invite to speak during the panel discussion (e.g. representatives from organizations, NGOs like WWF/CBD Alliance, the CBD Secretariat
like Neil Pratt or Chantal Robichaud, GEF etc.)

Tuesday, October 16th - 18:15 to 19:45
THE GLOBAL YOUTH BIODIVERSITY NETWORK (GYBN) - BUILDING A GLOBAL COALITION AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE TO HALT THE LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY!

This Side Event will introduce participants to the newly established Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) and will also provide a space to present and discuss the positions of youth organizations on the main issues of COP11 as well as the state of youth participation in the CBD, compared with youth participation in other UN processes. The idea to create an international network for youth working on Biodiversity has long been felt at numerous youth conferences and CBD negotiations. With the explicit support of the CBD Executive Secretary a small group of youth delegates formed an interim steering committee at the end of COP10 and prepared the establishment of the network. The network was officially launched at an international Kick-Off conference in Berlin, Germany, in late August 2012. GYBN's mission is to raise global awareness among young people for the intrinsic value of biodiversity. The network aims to strengthen and support youth efforts to promote and protect biodiversity. For this purpose GYBN provides a unique global platform where youth organizations and individuals can get in touch with each other and are able to join forces for the protection of biological diversity on our planet. GYBN also aims to become the international coordination platform for youth participation in the Convention on Biological Diversity and is committed to bring the opinions and positions of youth into the negotiations.

Thursday, October 18th - 18:15 - 19:45
INTERNATIONAL YOUTH INITIATIVES FOR THE PROTECTION OF BIODIVERSITY
Young people all around the world take action to halt the loss of Biodiversity. This side event will present outstanding projects and the work of youth organizations on the local, national and international level in all regions of the world. Participants will have the chance to discuss with young experts from youth NGOs about the importance of youth engagement on all level and what challenges youth organizations are facing when it comes to the implementation of successful projects and campaigns. The Side Event will include presentations from representatives from various youth organizations present at COP11.

Best regards

Christian

Hi Action WG!
Hope you are all well,
I don't know how you are planning to choose panel speakers and presenters, but I thought I'd put myself out there as a volunteer to participate in the first side event -- particularly for the second block or panel discussion, since I've been in both the FCCC and CSD processes, and my Senior year project focuses on the inter-connectivity between them -- however, I've never been a Youth Delegate, officially, since the US doesn't particularly encourage that yet. So if you're focusing on just official delegates, never mind. (:

Hey Mariana,

thank you very much for your mail and the great offer!
I am sorry that I didn't reply to you earlier, but I didn't had much internet access here in India throughout the past couple of days.

You're more than welcome to present about your experiences about youth participation in the UNFCCC and the CSD! I already contacted
a number of people a little while ago but none of them is going to participate in COP11, so I am very glad that you're willing to give a
presentation. I will put you on my list and will provide you with further updates soon. For the moment it would be great if you could just prepare
a 15 to 20-minute presentation for the Side Event on the 16th.

Looking forward to see you again in Hyderabad :)

Best regards

Christian
