Guys,

Just want to give you a heads up that we have not received any applications for the new board yet, if you haven't checked the email recently. I am going to send out a reminder email in the morning, but wonder if we should start thinking about what to do since we had a good amount of people interested in participating, but maybe not running the organization.

Hey guys,

What do you think about extending the deadline for applications until Monday? I think the Happy hour tomorrow will give prospective members a chance to figure out what exactly each position entails. I know a few people are concerned as to the time commitment that being a board member..maybe we can help clear that up tomorrow and give them more time?

Just a suggestion!

I think we might need to extend till next week Wednesday or Thursday OR have another meeting for folks interested in running for board membership. Folks have no idea what we really do even if they came to the first meeting so I think we should have a meeting that really speaks to what we do and the roles they will really take on. This is thought based on a convo i had this week with two people interested but still clueless.

I agree. I didn't realize we were asking for applications so soon. I definitely think people need to see more of the organization before they want to run it. We should have another meeting and maybe even try to plan an event before we have applications due.

BAM! I like that idea Nicole.
Can we host another meeting next week Thursday evening? Or the following week? I just do not want to lose the current momentum. I think we could do a meeting to discuss plans and assignments for an actual event so we can have people get involved with the swing of working together in GHN... Thoughts.

Sounds good--maybe we could meet as a board next week to discuss plans for the semester and start organizing things. Then the week after meet with our whole group and tell them our semester plan/see if anyone is interested in helping!

Can we put out a note this evening that we will be extending the election deadline and hosting a meeting to discuss election roles AND getting the first planning session underway for our upcoming event which is....?

PS--I love how we had a great turn out for the first meeting. I think once people see more of the org they will want to be a part of it!

We could definitely emphasize that while it might seem like a burden to be on the board, it's more rewarding.

I thought that the last meeting was the meeting where we told them our semester plan and to see if anyone was interested in helping?

On our phone call meeting, we laid out a timeline for electing the board which was sent out after, and had us accepting applications after our first meeting. I can send out an email extending the deadline...to when?

We've all had questions asked about a time commitment, what do we want to say to that? What do you all say is the time commitment of being on the board? I'd like us to have a standardized message for that question.

You are right Jordan. But with the questions being asked and the lack  of applications I think it is best we take a step back and really let folks learn more about what we do. They seem to feel they are being rushed.

So can we extend applications to first Friday in October? Nicole when do you suggest we have a meeting and start planning the first event with members? I think this coming Thursday but let me know thoughts.
They need to be involved first ie bought in before they do applications. That is the trick.

I'm down with an informational meeting to explain board roles better.

Isn't our first event the 2nd year panel?

Good deal.
I seem to have misplaced my list of events that we are planning on doing this semester. Does anyone happen to have that list and the potential dates discussed? Can we host the informational this coming Thursday? It will be short for sure.

Should we have a board meeting before we have an informational meeting? I think it might be good for applicants to see an event before we ask them to apply to better get the idea of what we're about and the scope of the GHN. Either way, Thursday works for me

Here is the list of the potential dates and events:

Brown bag lunch technical skills building workshop--October 7 (monday) or October 9 (wednesday) from 12:15-1:30
     -led by Dr. Waldman
-topic to be determined but Human Ops with a focus on nutrition/food security
-once we have a date, I'll solidify the topic with him

Second Year Informal Student Panel--October 21 (mon) or October 24 (Thursday) at 7:30/8:00
-specific for the global health track--not all of sphhs
-we could have one rep from each concentration (eoh, policy, comm, dme, mgmt)

Career Building series--two part series (maybe 3) to take place Monday November 11 and 18 from 12:00-1:30/2:00
-topics to be determined--I wanted to take a look at what they presented on last year
     -resumes/cover letters/interviewing/networking
-3 panelists for each workshop--hopefully those in the org that do recruiting
-potential orgs: InterAction (different than International Action and I'd really like to network with them); WFP; Accordia GH Foundation; Save the Children; PATH; PSI; WASH advocates; FHI360.

2 Annual (though I think we have to call is semi-annual now) Panel Luncheon to be held Friday, November 22 (before Thanksgiving) or December 6

We'll need to decide that today because if we have a 'member' meeting then I'll have to book a room and that needs to be 72 hrs in advance, which is tomorrow.

Great!
Jordan I say for sure book a spot and then send out a blast tomorrow and Thursday letting people know GHN is Hosting an Informational session about Board Positions and Roles of Members. From this meeting Applications will be accepted until October 4th. They should remember that this is an opportunity to expand their global health networks and to support fellow PH Students to gain awareness of GH Issues and how they can effect change both locally and internationally.

Thanks ladies :)

So tonight will be a brief conference call at 8pm. Here is the dial in info:

Hey ladies,

So based on our discussion this evening we are moving forward with getting Waldman's approval for his availability to do the workshop. So fingers crossed.
It will be a brown bag session like the other sessions we have had before. We are pushing for the session to be held on October 9th at 12noon.

For the November event panel and luncheon, I proposed the idea of consolidating the two events and having speaker/s come in and discuss their organizations and focus on the topic we pick for the the panel to address then break for lunch for about 30mins then move into the resume building and cover letter talk that can be done my Melanie Steimle (sorry about spelling) who does a lot of the job development and readiness pieces for GW grad students. I am thinking that the whole thing should run 3 hours max with the break down of:

12noon-1:30p Panel Discussion
1:30p-2p Lunch and Mingle
2p-3p Resume and Cover letter Talk with Melanie

I suggested this consolidation of events because I know this semester everyone has a different funky schedule and some folks have midterms and finals in November around the time we are proposing for this event ie Friday November 15th and I know some of us will not be able to devote time to two or three more events in the month of November or December.

So let me know thoughts and then we can start planning invitations and location reservations for this blow out GHN event in November!!

As for the meeting this coming Thursday we will give time for folks to ask questions about time management that seems to be the biggest issue. Not knowing hos much time they will have to devote to GHN....Sigh.
So I hope to break this down more for them and get them to apply so we have a solid board with members for January. Nicole was suggesting we do the turn over in December when things are a bit calmer for them.

Thank you ladies!!!
