Hi ladies,

I hope your summers are going well! I just wanted to suggest a charitable event possibility to see if you all would be interested.

It was recently brought to my attention that there is a dire need for diapers in underserved communities of the United States. I've added two recent articles that explain the situation. My thinking is that BPHSN and the Global Helath Network could collaborate to collect and raise funds for diaper distribution for women right here in D.C. I have already been promised tons of diapers from a dermatogist's office and am sure that with our combined efforts we can collect many more.

My idea is to have a collection area set up to receive donations for an entire month. Then at the end of the month we can have an event to celebrate our success and collect even more diapers. In the coming weeks I'll research which organizations are equipped to receive and distribute the collected diapers. I can think of two at the moment: The Family Health and Birth Center in NE DC-http://www.communityofhopedc.org/fhbc and The Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Health (they primarily service the underserved, immigrant, Latino community and have multiple locations in MD and DC)-http://www.maryscenter.org/?gclid=CK7c_93a5rgCFcR_Qgod5BgALQ. I interned at both of these organizations and believe that they would be good distribution sites. Also, I'm thinking that we could coolect the diapers during the month of September then Have the event during early October.

Let me know what you think!

Best,

Christian

Hi,

This sounds interesting. Has BPHSN already agreed to support this effort? If so what are the steps of the plan or will that be hashed out at our first meeting in September?

Hi,

BPHSN has not confirmed participation. Jazmin, the president, is traveling abroad right now. I sent her the email as well and am awaiting her reply. I can start planning in a few weeks after I speak with her and am back from my vacation.

Hi ladies,

We can set up the box(es) in Ross Hall. Ideally, I'd like us to accept donations starting next Monday, October 28-Friday, November 22. I think we could have a happy hour to thank all of those who donated and invite the recipient organizations to mix and mingle with PH students. This could also be an opportunity for networking of course-our goal!

Jordan, here is the blurb and the articles to be included in the email.

The unmet need for diapers in the United States is a growing problem. With your donation we can add to the solution by donating loads of diapers to those in need, spreading the word, and increasing awareness of this issue and those organizations working to combat it and other ills that affect the most vulnerable population in the United States.

Recipient organizations will include: Latin American Youth Center, Family Birth and Health Center, So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E).

For monetary and large diaper donations email Christian Brewer: chris...@gwmail.gwu.edu

For small donations visit the 1st floor of Ross Hall, near the stairwell or the Global Health Department, 2175 Kst NW Suite 200.

Kirsty, do we have enough money to buy appetizers for people during the happy hour?

Any other thoughts?

I'm excited!

Hello again,

Kirsty, can we meet to talk about money to create flyers and the possibility of buying appetizers for the happy hour?

All, do we need to contact anyone in Ross Hall or GH dept to set out a box for receiving donations?

Thanks! Have a great meeting tonight and weekend!

Yes, we can just set out a box in Ross for collection, no need to ask anyone.
