Hi folks,

I am considering building a mobile app using GWT. I want to take
advantage of HTML5 features and touch UI components.

Is gwt-mobile-webkit the most appropriate project addressing these
needs? Are there other GWT based projects that pertain to this
requirement (mobile + HTML5 + touch UI components)?

The Project Home of this project hasn't been updated since April
2010. What's the status?

Many thanks!

Hi Jenson,

As you probably already know, this project addresses Geolocation, Web Database and Local Storage needs for (mobile) GWT developers.

Since GWT version 2.3 however, both Geolocation and Local Storage are part of the GWT SDK itself, and Web Database is no longer endorsed by the standards body (due to unclear SQL compatibility) in favor of a new API called IndexedDB.

Having said all that, the provided libraries of this project are still useful in e.g. projects using an older GWT version, and webkit browsers (Safari on iOS, Android) do support the Web Database API.

Unfortunately my plans to add an AppCache library and a UI library are pushed back due to some personal events. I still hope to pick it up sooner rather than later, but can't promise anything at this point.

Hope this answers your question,

Bart Guijt.

Many thanks for the prompt and detailed reply. I understand now that
some of the HTML5 functionality has been rolled into the GWT SDK
itself. In fact, I just watched a video on Youtube from Google I/O
2011 where John Labanca mentions your contribution!

With regards to UI library, can you recommend the best place to find
touch based GWT components? I have found the "gwt-touch" and "mgwt"
projects. Are those projects the best place to find these types of UI
widgets? Does the GWT SDK offer any mobile optimized widgets?

Many thanks.

Hi Jenson,

Yes, John Labanca was trying really hard to pronounce my name :-)

Anyway, I have not reviewed or used any GWT-Mobile specific UI projects out there. The GWT has a mobile UI example[1], maybe you should start there.

Cheers!
