Subject: 2018 Esplanade Youth Movement Youth Basketball Tournament - Call for volunteers and donations

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all those who were able to make the meeting last night.

During the meeting, I provided a brief update about upcoming activities at the St. Lawrence Community Recreation Centre and highlighted the 6th Annual 5 on 5 Youth vs Metro Toronto Police Basketball Tournament coming up on July 29, 2018.

The event is cohosted by The Esplanade Youth Movement, Toronto Police Service 51 Division, Toronto Fire Services and Toronto EMS. I’ve attached the poster and flyer. Feel free to print and post in your respective buildings.

This year’s tournament will take place on the Esplanade between Princess St. & Hahn Pl. – right across the park from the Distillery District!

The tournament is aimed at building stronger bridges between youth and Toronto Police and to get to know the local fire fighters and Toronto EMS who work in our communities.

Event organizers need our help though! Equipment, food and drink and volunteers are desperately needed, so here’s hoping our generous community can pitch in and make this year’s tournament better than ever and help send a talented youth to college or university.

Based on last year’s event and expected increase in participation and attendance this year, here’s what’s needed:

Approximately 12 basketballs (for the games and giveaways) and a basketball rack

Popcorn machine

Cotton candy machine

2 refs

40 volunteers – 10 lead volunteers to coordinate and 30 volunteers to help with set-up, strike-down, serving food and drinks and rallying the crowd and players

Food/drink – 70 packs of hot dogs (meat and veggie), snacks such as chips or pretzels, and pop

20 cases of water

6 Tents

15 tables

An ice container – about the size of a garbage pail

The GWNA will also make a cash donation to the tournament.

If you are able to donate any of the above items, or additional food items or make a cash donation, please get back to me, Ruby Chauhan, as soon as possible. Your support means a lot to the Esplanade Youth Movement and to the community.

Thanks, everyone!

Background on the tournament and the Esplanade Youth Movement

The Esplanade Youth Movement focuses on preventing youth-on-youth violence by involving members through educational workshops and free community programs and by creating awareness in the surrounding community.

This year tournament organizer’s are aiming to provide a scholarship to college or university for a winning player. Organizers would name the scholarship after one of the local youths lost due to gang related violence.
