Design Teams Announced for Waterfront Parks Design Competition

Back in February 2018, we launched an innovative design competition with the City of Toronto for two new waterfront parks. We invited talented and creative design teams from around the world to pre-qualify for the competition that would seek bold design proposals for Toronto’s York Street Park and Rees Street Park.

In total, more than 40 design teams from 18 cities submitted proposals outlining their qualifications. We were thrilled to see such a high-level of interest from some of the world’s most innovative and creative design teams, representing a wide range of different landscape and design philosophies.

We’ve shortlisted 10 design teams to participate in the six-week international design competition for York Street Park and Rees Street Park. Five teams have been assigned to each park and will respond to a request for proposals that calls for innovative designs that will serve the diverse needs of local residents, office workers and visitors.

Find out who will be competing to design these two new waterfront parks in our recent blog post

Next up, these ten teams will participate in a six-week design competition and produce conceptual designs that will be put on public display at Toronto City Hall and online for a two-week public comment period. The public exhibition dates will be announced next month. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Save the Date: Community Consultation on Port Lands Flood Protection – July 18

Our giant model of the future Port Lands on display at our February 2018 public meeting. Don’t miss your chance to see the model this July!

Join us on July 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to learn more about Port Lands Flood Protection. We’re one year into this seven-year project that will re-naturalize the mouth of the Don River and create a new river valley through the Port Lands. When this project is complete, Toronto will have a new island, new parks and green spaces and new roads and bridges – the foundation for future communities just minutes from downtown.

At this meeting, we'll present basic project information and updates on design and construction. We’ll collect public feedback on the design of the new river valley and natural green spaces, roads and bridges. Project team members will also be there to answer your questions.

More details about this meeting will be confirmed soon. Check the new Port Lands website for updates or follow us on Facebook to get event invites.

Project Updates: Sidewalk Toronto

The 12 Sidewalk Toronto Fellows gather on a rooftop overlooking Toronto's downtown.

Roundtable #2 Highlight Video

On May 3, over 400 Torontonians attended the second Sidewalk Toronto public roundtable meeting to share their ideas and feedback on the Quayside project. If you couldn’t make it to the meeting, you can watch the video of the presentation to see what was discussed. The summary feedback report for the second roundtable will be available soon.

Stay tuned for more opportunities to get involved in the coming months. Check out the Sidewalk Toronto website for updates or subscribe to the newsletter.

Sidewalk Labs opens "307" at Quayside

This Saturday, Sidewalk Labs is opening “307,” their new experimental work space. Torontonians are invited to help them kick off their first “Open Sidewalk,” a monthly event series designed for people of all ages and abilities that will feature prototypes, performances, workshops, and other activities. Inside and outside they will be exploring some of the ideas that could become part of the future neighbourhood and establish an open venue for community co-creation.

Open Sidewalk”  launches on Saturday, June 16, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Sidewalk Toronto Fellows on the move

Last week, our 12 young and talented Sidewalk Toronto Fellows returned from their first trip to learn how different cities are revitalizing their waterfronts and using new urban technologies.

On June 2, the fellows flew to Amsterdam and toured Buiksloterham, De Ceuvel, and South Havens to learn about the urban history of the city. On June 5 it was off to Copenhagen, where they spent three amazing days on a Baiskeli (bike) tour to see the biking infrastructure and waterfront revitalization efforts of the city. They then traveled to Malmo, Sweden to tour Hyllie and Western Harbour.

Following their trip abroad, the fellows have already begun to compile their learnings from Europe for their public report, where they will give their formal recommendations for Sidewalk Toronto. In July they will travel to Boston, New York, and Vancouver.

Construction update

Construction on the Cherry Street Lakefilling is about 40 per cent complete. The internal confinement berm is complete and work has started on lakefilling and the new dock wall. Marine landscaping has also started, building the foundation for new aquatic habitat.

We are preparing to start construction on the full Port Lands Flood Protection project. Site preparation work is also ongoing at a number of locations in the Port Lands.  This includes drilling to collect soil and groundwater samples, surface water sampling, land surveying, pilot testing for soil treatment technologies, geophysical surveys, and vegetation and wildlife surveys.

For details about what to expect this summer, read the latest construction notice here.

In Brief

City of Toronto to complete the Martin Goodman Trail
Last month, the City of Toronto announced plans to complete a section of the Martin Goodman Trail along Unwin Avenue in the Port Lands this summer. This section of the Martin Goodman Trail will complete the last link of the 20 km cycling and walking trail along Toronto’s waterfront from the western to the eastern beaches. Learn more about this exciting announcement.

Jack Layton Ferry Terminal open for the season
On May 12, the entrance promenade at the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal re-opened for the season.  Given last year’s flooding and closure of the Toronto Islands, our priority was to ensure that the public had uninterrupted access to the Toronto Island Park this summer. To make this happen, construction on the entrance promenade was suspended and we will return in the fall to complete the remaining work once the high-traffic season is over. Read our latest construction notice to find out what to expect this summer.

Lower Yonge Precinct - Notice of Study Completion
Waterfront Toronto and the City of Toronto have jointly completed a Public Realm Concept and Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study for the Lower Yonge Precinct Area. The objective of the study is to identify the infrastructure needed to support redevelopment of the Lower Yonge Precinct Area. An Environmental Study Report (ESR) has been placed on public record for a 30-day review period starting May 31, 2018 and ending June 30, 2018.
