WISHING YOU A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON AND WINTER BREAK!
This is the last Crier until January. Thank you to all who have given their time, talents and resources during 2014 to support and strengthen GW! Hope to see everyone at the PTA meeting on January 13 at 7:30 pm (time change to accommodate the 7th & 8th grade Science Fair).

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT
Now is the time to donate if you want to maximize the tax benefit for your donation for 2014. The GW PTA has one main fundraiser that raises the vast majority of the money that is needed to support all the activities we sponsor to support our children and teachers.  We need to raise $3000 more in order to implement the approved activities for the year. Please make your donation today. Click here to donate by credit card or to pay with a check or visit http://www.gwmspta.org/fundraisers/gw-donors

Sincerely,
The GW Donors Committee

LATIN STUDENTS PERFORM CUM LAUDE AT STATE CONVENTION
On November 23rd and 24th, 42 7th and 8th graders from George Washington Middle School’s Latin program went to the Virginia Junior Classical League (VJCL) convention in Richmond. The VJCL convention is an annual gathering of Latin students from across the Commonwealth wherein students face off in competitions of all kinds, attend talks on a multitude of topics related to Greco-Roman antiquity, and socialize with their fellow VJCLers. They were impressive as always, with nearly a quarter of our delegation scoring high in academic competitions and winning a number of “Top 10” awards, including some in categories in which GW has never participated. These awards include:

Lila Arnold—4th place in Grammar (Level I) (Tie)
Maggie Hicks—4th place in Grammar (Level I) (Tie)
Ami Falk—5th place in Grammar (Level I)
Thomas Haymes—6th place in Grammar (Level I)
Lillian Finegold-Sachs—5th place in Grammar (Level II)
Peter Moser—8th place in Roman Life
Blythe Markel—4th place in Modern Mythology (Original Composition)
Emily Van Court—4th place in Reading Comprehension (Level I)
Lila Arnold—7th place in Reading Comprehension (Level I)
Nora Gentry—5th place in Reading Comprehension (Level I)
Russell Biesada—7th place in Reading Comprehension (Level II)

Mark Berry, Brady Gates, Teddy Poore, Blythe Markel, Phil Ainey, Iris Castro and Matthew Kiernan deserve special recognition as well. Their certamen (academic quiz bowl) team finished 8th in a field of 24—quite the feat considering that none had played competitive certamen before and that they were competing primarily against high school students.

Be sure to congratulate these students if you see them. Given that over 2,100 students from 91 Virginia schools participated in the convention and hundreds of students participated in each category, these are outstanding honors.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GW REFLECTIONS WINNERS AT THE CITY LEVEL!
The Alexandria PTA Council has announced the city winners of the 2014-15 Reflections Awards, and six GWMS students are on the list!

These students' art entries all won First Place in GWMS's own Reflections contest last month, and are now being honored at the Alexandria city level, where they competed against entries from Francis Hammond and Jefferson-Houston. The theme for this year's contest is, "The World Would Be a Better Place If...."

The GW students who earned awards at the city level:
Leslie Noir Carr, 8th grade, won 2nd Place in Film Production for her short movie, "Cleaning Up Our Act."
Janae Ann Ross Holster, 6th grade, won 1st Place in Dance Choreography for a dance she calls "Change."
Ana Humphrey, 8th grade, won 1st Place in Visual Arts for her mixed-media piece, "Through Woven Stories."
Angelina A. Giovachino Hunt, 7th grade, won 1st Place in Literature for a science-fiction short story, "History Repeats Itself."
Isabel Ann Metzler, 6th grade, won 2nd Place in Photography for her photo, "The World Would Be a Better Place If We Saw the Little Details."
Jonathan Morgan Petrini, 7th grade, won 1st Place in Music Composition for a classical composition, "Sonata in F Minor, Movement 1: Trial & Error."

The Alexandria PTA Reflections Awards Reception and Art Show Opening will be Friday, Feb. 27, at the city's Durant Arts Center on Cameron Street. The event is free and open to the public.

GW's 1st Place winners -- Janae, Ana, Angelina, and Jonathan -- will now compete at the District level against students from Fairfax, Arlington, and Falls Church. Entries that win 1st Place in the District are advanced to the Virginia state PTA Reflections contest.

Reflections is a National PTA arts program that encourages students to create art in any of six different arts categories (Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts) based on a theme. Students compete in age-level divisions, with their works evaluated in a blind judging by judges who are experts in the arts field. First-Place winners at each level go on to compete at the next level (school, city or county, district, state, and national). For more information on PTA Reflections, see the Arts in Education page of the Virginia PTA website, www.vapta.org.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR CONCLUDES WEDNESDAY EVENING
The GWMS Library Media Center is hosting a Winter Scholastic Book Fair from Tuesday December 9th through Wednesday evening, December 17, 2014. We are open during school hours, plus on December 17th our Family Event is from 6:30 until 7:30 pm where you will find all sorts of great reading for the winter break before you enjoy GW's Band Concert.

We are in need of parent volunteers to help staff the fair, so if you can donate half an hour or more, please phone the library at 703-706-4522 to schedule a time.

Not only does the Book Fair help raise funds to purchase library resources, it encourages reading among our students. We invite you to our school to share in this celebration of books and reading. Stop by the Teacher Wish List Table and help add books to our classroom shelves by purchasing books and donating them to your child's class. See you at our Winter Book Fair!

MR. MCDONOUGH FEATURED AS GUEST ARTIST AT MISSISSIPPI MIDDLE SCHOOL
GW's Director of Theater Robert McDonough was invited to be the guest artist with Northwest Rankin Middle School near Jackson, Mississippi, during the last week of October. McDonough is the author of the play “The Walking Boys,” the story of Salva Dut, a member of the Dinka Tribe in South Sudan. The play dramatizes Salva’s experiences as a boy during the Sudanese Civil War during the 1980s. The narrative chronicles his journey into manhood after losing family and friends to violence, starvation and disease. It’s a story of children with indomitable spirit and heroism.

Mr. McDonough directed the world premiere at George Washington in the spring of 2011. The play has since been read and staged in dozens of schools throughout the country. The George Washington production was part of a school-wide fundraising campaign that raised nearly $15,000 toward the construction of a well in a war-torn village of South Sudan. The production at Northwest Rankin is also a part of that school’s efforts to raise money to build another well through the H2O for Life campaign. Several schools are in pre-production for future performances of the play, including schools in Brooklyn, New York; Parker, Colorado; and Stuart, Florida.
